Bearing Bracket
CAUTION!
The upper section of the bearing bracket is bolted to the cylinder block with two M8 multi point socket bolts which are found in the valley between the cylinder heads. These bolts must not be loosened under any circumstances, because it causes a deformation of the cylinder block which is no longer repairable.
• Secure engine in engine and transmission holder (VAS 6095) when working on engine.
Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required
• Tensioning element (T10201)
• Torque wrench (5 to 50 Nm) (VAG 1331)
• Torque wrench (40 to 200 Nm) (VAG 1332)
Removing
- Remove bolts for lower section of bearing bracket.
- Install engine support bridge (T10201) on lower section of bearing bracket as shown.
- Tighten bolts of tensioning device (T10201) to 20 Nm.
- Remove lower section of bearing bracket.
Installing
- Place tensioning device (T10201) on lower section of bearing bracket and tighten bolts to 20 Nm.
- Check whether all bearing shells are lying properly in the bearing supports --> [ (Item 4) Bearing shell ] Service and Repair. Pay attention to thrust washers --> [ (Item 2) Thrust washer ] Service and Repair.
- Carefully place lower section of bearing bracket into cylinder block.
Tighten main bearing bolts.
Tightening main bearing bolts
- Tighten the main bearing bolts in three passes in the tightening sequence shown as follows (- arrow - points in driving direction).
1 - Tighten using torque wrench:
First pass = 35 Nm
Second pass = 65 Nm
2 - Tighten further using a ratchet
Final pass = 1/2 additional turn (180°)
