Diagnostic Procedures

Glow Plugs, Checking

Cylinder bank 1 is located in direction of travel, right.

Cylinder bank 2 is located in direction of travel, left.

Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required

Voltage test lamp (VAG1527)

Connector test kit (VAG1594)

Flex wrench (3220)

Test Prerequisites

Fuses in E-box (plenum chamber, left) must be OK:





Battery voltage must be at least 11.5 volts.

Ground (GND) connections between engine and chassis must be OK.

Ignition is switched off.

Test Sequence

Glow plugs for cylinder 1 and 6 can be checked without removing intake manifolds.

- Remove intake manifolds if necessary.

- Disconnect glow plug connectors from glow plugs.

- Connect wire of voltage tester (VAG1527) to plus pole in engine compartment (arrow) using adapter cables.





- Attach test lead of voltage test lamp to each glow plug in succession.

LED lights up: Glow plug OK.

LED does not light up: Replace glow plug

- Remove and install glow plugs using flex wrench (3220)

Tightening torque: 15 Nm.
