Pump Injector Unit, Checking

Diagnostic Procedures

Pump Injector Unit, Checking

Cylinder bank 1 is located in direction of travel, right.

Cylinder bank 2 is located in direction of travel, left.

When servicing terminals on central connector for cylinder head, use only silver-plated terminals.

Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required

Multimeter (VAG1526) or Multimeter (VAG1715)

Connector test kit (VAG1594)

Test Prerequisites

Fuses in E-box (plenum chamber, left) must be OK:

Battery voltage must be at least 11.5 volts.

All electrical consumers such as, for example, lights and rear window defroster must be switched off.

For vehicles with automatic transmission, selector lever must be in P.

If vehicle is equipped with an A/C system, it must be switched off.

Ground (GND) connections between engine and chassis must be OK.

Central connector at cylinder heads bank 1 and bank 2 checked for damage and are OK.

Ignition is switched off.

Cylinder bank 1: Check Valve for pump/injector, cylinder 1 (N240) to Valve for pump/injector, cylinder 5 (N244).

Cylinder bank 2: Check Valve for pump/injector, cylinder 6 (N245) to Cylinder 10 Pump/Injector (N306).

Pump/Injector Valves (N240 and N244) Test Sequence

- Remove cylinder head cover.

- Pry off connectors of all pump-injector units using a screwdriver. To prevent canting. While doing so, support opposite side of connector using light finger pressure.

- Check resistance between terminals of the corresponding Pump-Injector Unit valve.

Specified value: approx. 0.1 to 1.0 ohms

If specified value is not obtained:

- Replace malfunctioning Pump-Injector Unit.

- Erase DTC memory of Engine Control Module (ECM) --> [ Diagnostic Mode 04 - Erase DTC Memory ] Diagnostic Modes 01 - 09.

- Generate readiness code --> [ Readiness Code ] Monitors, Trips, Drive Cycles and Readiness Codes.

If specified value is obtained:

- Check Control Module Wires.

Control Module Wires, Checking

- Connect test box ((VAG1598/42)) to Engine Control Module (ECM) (J623) wiring harness using adapter cable ((VAG1598/39-1)) , connecting test box for wiring test.

- Check wires between test box and 2-pin connector for open circuit according to wiring diagram:

Cyl. 1: Terminal 2 + socket 46

Cyl. 2: Terminal 2 + socket 48

Cyl. 3: Terminal 2 + socket 1

Cyl. 4: Terminal 2 + socket 2

Cyl. 5: Terminal 2 + socket 47

Wire resistance: max. 1.5ohms

- Check wires between all 2-pin connectors (terminal 1) and test box for open circuit according to wiring diagram.

Terminal 1 + socket 31

Terminal 1 + socket 32

Wire resistance: max. 1.5 ohms

- Also check wires for short circuit to each other, to vehicle Ground (GND) and to B+.

Specified value: infinite ohms

If no malfunctions are found in wires:

- Replace Engine Control Module (ECM) (J623) --> [ Engine Control Modules, Replacing ] Engine Control Modules, Replacing.

Pump/Injector Valves (N245 and N306) Test Sequence

- Remove cylinder head cover.
