Front Wheel Drive: Overview






Front Wheel Drive

1 Eccentric Bolt

For camber setting

After loosening, perform vehicle alignment, refer to => [ Vehicle Alignment Procedure Overview ] Vehicle Alignment Procedure Overview

2 Nut

M12 x 1.5

95 Nm

Self-locking

Always replace after removal

Always tighten threaded connections in curb weight position, refer to => [ Rear Axle in Curb Weight Position ] Rear Axle in Curb Weight Position

3 Eccentric Washer

Inner bore with tab

4 Eccentric Bolt

For toe setting

After loosening, perform vehicle alignment, refer to => [ Vehicle Alignment Procedure Overview ] Vehicle Alignment Procedure Overview

5 Eccentric Washer

Inner bore with tab

6 Nut

95 Nm

M12 x 1.5

Adjust torque wrench (V.A.G 1332) to 80 Nm when tightening nut.

This tightening specification applies only in conjunction with insert tool T10179.

Self-locking

Always replace after removal

7 Subframe

8 Bolt

Always replace after removal

90 Nm plus an additional 90° turn

M12 x 1.5 x 90

9 Lower Transverse Link

Removing and installing, refer to => [ Lower Transverse Link ] Front Wheel Drive

10 Nut

Always replace after removal

90 Nm plus an additional 90° turn

M12 x 1.5 x 75

18 Upper Control Arm

130 Nm plus an additional 90° turn

M14 x 1.5

Self-locking

21 Wheel Bearing Housing

Removing and installing, refer to => [ Wheel Bearing Housing ] Front Wheel Drive

22 Washer

Always replace after removal

24 Tie Rod

Various versions

Closed in direction of travel (the right and left tie rods are different)

Opened downward (the right and left tie rods are the same)

It is possible to interchange

Always replace after removal

Wheel Bearing Housing and Trailing Arm Assembly Overview





1 Bolt

Always replace after removal

50 Nm plus an additional 45° turn

2 Mounting Bracket

3 Bolt

Always replace after removal

90 Nm plus an additional 90° turn

M12 x 1.5 x 80

4 Coupling Rod

Coupling rod changed in MY 2004

During start of production, coupling rods with two ball joints were revised to coupling rods with one ball joint and a bonded rubber bushing. The side with the bonded rubber bushing is attached to the stabilizer bar.

A mixed installation is not permitted

Connects stabilizer to trailing link/wheel bearing housing

5 Bolt

Always replace after removal

90 Nm plus an additional 45° turn

Observe tightening sequence => [ Installing ] Front Wheel Drive

6 Trailing Arm

Removing and installing, refer to => [ Trailing Arm with Mounting Bracket ] Front Wheel Drive

Servicing, refer to => [ Trailing Arm Bonded Rubber Bushing ] Front Wheel Drive

7 Bolt

8 Nm

8 Right Rear ABS Wheel Speed Sensor (G44)/Left Rear ABS Wheel Speed Sensor (G46)

Can be checked in Guided Fault Finding using the

Before inserting sensor, clean inner surface of mounting hole and coat with polycarbamide grease (G 000 650)

9 Wheel Bearing Housing

Removing and installing, refer to => [ Wheel Bearing Housing ] Front Wheel Drive

10 Bonded Rubber Bushing

Replace, refer to => [ Wheel Bearing Housing Bonded Rubber Bushing ] Front Wheel Drive

11 Nut

45 Nm

Always replace after removal

12 Bolt

4 Nm

13 Brake Disc

14 Dust Cap

Always replace after removal

Pressing off and driving in, refer to => [ Wheel Bearing and Wheel Hub ] Front Wheel Drive

An appropriate seal can only be achieved with a new dust cap.

15 Bolt

Always replace after removal

180 Nm plus an additional 180° turn

M16 x 1.5 x 70

Loosen and tighten using bit XZN 18 (T10162)

16 Wheel Hub with Wheel Bearing

The ABS sensor ring is installed in the wheel bearing

Removing and installing, refer to => [ Wheel Bearing and Wheel Hub ] Front Wheel Drive

The wheel bearing and wheel hub are installed together in a housing.

This wheel bearing/hub unit is maintenance and adjustment free. Adjusting and servicing is not possible!

Spring end rotated up to stop

5 Bolt

Always replace after removal

50 Nm plus an additional 45° turn

6 Shock Absorbers

7 Lower Transverse Link

Stabilizer Bar Assembly Overview





1 Stabilizer

Note different suspension versions, refer to => [ Vehicle Data Label ] Description and Operation

Removing and installing, refer to => [ Stabilizer Bar ] Front Wheel Drive

2 Rubber Mount

Replace mounts always on both sides of vehicle

3 Clamp

4 Bolt

Always replace after removal

25 Nm plus an additional 45° turn

Tighten uniformly

Always tighten threaded connections in curb weight position, refer to => [ Rear Axle in Curb Weight Position ] Rear Axle in Curb Weight Position

5 Wheel Bearing Housing

6 Nut

Always replace after removal

45 Nm

Self-locking

7 Coupling Rod

Coupling rod changed in MY 2004
