Transmission, Removing
Transmission, Removing
Short Description
The transmission is removed downward as a unit.
From above;
The battery, air filter housing and starter are removed. Coolant hoses are clamped off. The left transmission mount is removed and the engine and transmission are supported.
From below:
The subframe is removed together with the pendulum support, steering gear and both lower control arms.
Removing the subframe can be found. If done correctly, the subframe can be removed and installed without the customer experiencing increased tire wear later. It is recommended to read this information prior to removing the transmission. In this way, the subframe can be secured and removed correctly.
Locating pins (T10096) are definitely needed for this.
If the subframe is not secured by the pins, then later an alignment will be necessary.
In this case, an alignment is unnecessary. It would be a lot of work and an unnecessary charge!
Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required
• Engine Support Bridge (10-222A)
• Adjustment Plate (3282/42A)
• Adapter (10-222A/13)
• Hose Clamps up to 40 mm (3093)
• Transmission Support (3282)
• Insert Tool 18 mm (T10179)
• Hose Clamps up to 40 mm (3093) and/or hose clamps up to 25 mm dia. (3094)
• Pin (3282/29)
• Template (3282/59)
• Engine and Transmission Jack (V.A.G 1383A)
Removing
- Lift the vehicle, all 4 lift points of the hoist are at the same height.
- Place the selector lever in the P position.
• Do not place the vehicle on the floor after loosening the drive axle bolt.
- Press the brake in order to remove the left drive axle bolt - arrow - (second technician).
- Remove the entire air filter housing.
- Remove the battery, the battery tray bolts - arrow - and tray.
- Remove the starter.
- Remove the selector lever cable lock washers - arrows - and cable from the transmission.
Use pliers to remove the washer on the cable mounting bracket. Do not use a sharp end lever otherwise the rubber grommet on the cable may get damaged.
Both lock washers must later be replaced when adjusting the cable.
Remove the cable from the transmission cable mounting bracket with great care. Do not bend.
You can also slide the cable back slightly from the cable mounting bracket and later remove when lowering transmission. But then observe the cable when lowering the transmission.
During later installation, only engage the small lock washer after checking and adjusting cable. Refer to => [ Selector Lever Cable, Checking through 02.2009 ] Selector Lever Cable, Checking through 02.2009.
- Clamp off the coolant hoses with either (3093) or (3094) and remove them.
- Remove the cable bracket from the large front black transmission cover (2 M6 nuts).
- Release the Mechatronic connector retainer by rotating and remove connector.
- Remove all engine/transmission bolts. (T10179) is especially good for this.
- Remove filler pieces from both fender upper edges.
- Disconnect any hoses and cables in the area of the (10-222A ) lifting eye on the engine.
- Support the engine and transmission with (10 - 222A), (10 - 222A/10) and (10 - 222A/13). Do not lift up.
- Remove all bolts - 1 and 2 - for the engine mount bracket - A -.
- Lower the engine/transmission slightly using (10 - 222A ) spindles so the bracket can be removed.
Remove the bracket - arrow -.
- Remove the noise insulation and lower section of the left front wheel housing liner if necessary.
- Remove the drive axle from the transmission and carefully lay aside.
Do not damage the surface of the drive axles. For this reason, tie straps made out of plastic or both (T10038) are very good.
You can remove the left drive axle if you also remove subframe.
Remove the subframe.
Removing the subframe is found in => Suspension, Wheels,
Steering 40 Removal and Installation. If done correctly, the subframe can be removed and installed without the customer experiencing increased tire wear later. It is recommended to read this information prior to removing the transmission. In this way, the subframe can be secured and removed correctly.
- A small, additional cover plate (above right drive axle flange) is located on the engine/transmission intermediate plate. Remove this cover plate - A -.
- Align (3282) with (3282/42 A).
- Guide (V.A.G 1383 A) under transmission and support transmission. Do not lift up.
The transmission is disconnected from the engine in this position.
- Remove all remaining engine to transmission bolts.
- Remove the transmission from engine while being careful of selector lever cable and lower transmission.
Transport transmission and secure to assembly stand. Refer to => [ Transmission, Transporting and Securing to Assembly Stand ] Procedures.
