Coolant, draining and filling

Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required
^ Refractometer T10007
^ Drip tray V.A.G 1306
^ Spring-type clip pliers VAS 5024
^ Cooling system charging unit VAS 6096

Draining
- Remove cap from coolant expansion tank.

CAUTION! Hot steam may escape when the expansion tank is opened. Place a cloth over the cap and open with caution.

- Remove sound insulation.

Vehicles with a radiator drain plug

- Remove radiator drain plug to drain coolant - arrow-.

Vehicles without a radiator drain plug

- Pull off bottom coolant hose retaining clip - arrow - and remove coolant hose from radiator quick release coupling to drain coolant.

Continuation for all vehicles

- To drain coolant from engine also remove coolant hose at oil cooler - arrow-.

Note: Observe disposal regulations!

Filling

Note:
^ Only use coolant additive G 12 in accordance with TL VW 774 F. Identification characteristic: lilac color.
^ G 12 lilac (in accordance with TL VW 774 F) can be mixed with the previous coolant additive G 12 red.
^ G 12 and coolant additives marked "In accordance with TL VW 774 F " prevent frost and corrosion damage, scaling and also raise the boiling point of the coolant. Therefore, the system must be filled all-year-round with frost and corrosion protection additives.
^ Because of its high boiling point, the coolant improves engine reliability under heavy loads, particularly in countries with tropical climates.
^ Frost protection is required down to about -25°C (in countries with arctic climates: down to about -35°C).
^ The coolant concentration must not be reduced by adding water even in warmer seasons and in warmer countries. The anti-freeze must be at least 40% of the mixture.
^ If for climatic reasons greater frost protection is required, the amount of G 12 can be increased, but only up to 60% (frost protection to about -40°C). Otherwise frost protection and cooling effectiveness are reduced again.
^ If radiator, heat exchanger, cylinder head or cylinder head gasket is replaced, do not reuse old coolant.

Recommended mixture proportions:
The quantity of coolant can vary according to the vehicle equipment.

Recommended mixture proportions:

Vehicles with a radiator drain plug
- Screw drain plug into radiator.

Vehicles without a radiator drain plug

- Install lower coolant hose and secure with retaining clip - arrow-.

Continuation for all vehicles

- Push coolant hose onto oil cooler connection and secure with a spring-type clip.

Filling with charging unit VAS 6096:
- Fill cooling system using cooling system charging unit VAS 6096. Operating instructions for cooling system charging unit VAS 6096.

Filling without charging unit VAS 6096:

Vehicles with a Max. mark on expansion tank

- Fill with coolant up to Max. mark on expansion tank.
- Install expansion tank cap.
- Run engine until coolant fan starts.
- Check coolant level and add if necessary. When engine is at normal operating temperature, coolant level must be on Max. mark, when engine is cold, between Min. and Max. marks.

Vehicles without a Max. mark on expansion tank

- Fill with coolant slowly up to upper edge of hatched field on expansion tank.
- Install expansion tank cap.
- Run engine until radiator fan cuts in.
- Check coolant level and add if necessary.

When engine is at normal operating temperature the coolant level must lie on upper marking of the hatched field.

When engine is cold the coolant level must lie approx. in middle of hatched field.
