Front Crankshaft Seal: Service and Repair
Crankshaft oil seal - belt pulley end, replacing
Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required
^ Counterhold 3099
^ Oil seal extractor 3203
^ Assembly tool T10053
^ Torque wrench (5...50 Nm) V.A.G 1331
^ Torque wrench (40...200 Nm) V.A.G 1332
Removing
- Remove toothed belt.
- Remove crankshaft toothed belt pulley by counterholding toothed belt pulley with counterhold 3099.
Note: When bolting on the counterhold place two washers between the toothed belt pulley and the counterhold.
- To guide seal extractor, screw center bolt into crankshaft onto stop by hand.
- Unscrew inner part of oil seal extractor 3203 two turns (approx. 3 mm) out of outer part and lock with knurled screw.
- Lubricate threaded head of oil seal extractor, place in position and exert firm pressure - arrow - to screw it into oil seal as far as possible.
- Loosen knurled screw and turn inner part against crankshaft until oil seal is pulled out.
Installing
Note: The oil seal sealing lip must not be additionally oiled or greased.
- Remove oil residue from crankshaft journal using clean cloth.
- Mount guide sleeve T10053/1 onto crankshaft journal.
- Slide oil seal over guide sleeve onto crankshaft journal.
- Using press sleeve T10053, press oil seal onto stop with center bolt.
- Install toothed belt and tension.
