Compression Check: Testing and Inspection



Compression, checking





Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required
^ Jointed wrench 3220
^ Torque wrench (5...50 Nm) V.A.G 1331
^ Adapter V.A.G 1381/12
^ Compression tester V.A.G 1763

Requirements
^ Engine oil temperature at least. 30°C

Work sequence
- Remove engine cover.





- Disconnect central connector for unit injectors - 1 -.
- Pull connector strip - 2 - off glow plugs.
- Remove all glow plugs - 3 - using jointed wrench 3220.





- Screw in adapter V.A.G 1381/12 in place of glow plugs.
- Check compression using compression tester V.A.G 1763.

Note: Use compression tester per tester operating instructions.

- Operate starter until tester shows no further pressure increase.

Compression pressures
^ New: 25 to 31 bar
^ Wear limit: 19 bar
^ Permissible difference between all cylinders: 5 bar
- Install glow plugs with jointed wrench 3220. Tightening torque: 15 Nm
- Read fault memory Engine control module fault memory, reading and erasing; Reading and erasing fault memory of engine control unit.

Note: Disconnecting the central connector for unit injectors causes faults to be stored. Therefore read and erase fault memory.
