Output Shaft, Adjusting
Output Shaft, Adjusting
(Determine adjustment shim for output shaft)
Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required
• Dial gauge holder (VW 387)
• Magnetic plate 50 MM dia. (VW 385/17)
• Thrust pad (VW 512)
• Replacement stud (8 MM/10 MM) (3114/2)
• Punch (VW 407)
• Torque wrench 5 to 50 Nm (V.A.G 1331)
• Dial gauge
• - 1 - Internal extractor (Kukko 21/6 )
• - 4 - Counter-support (Kukko 22/2 )
It is necessary to readjust the output shaft when the following components are replaced:
• Gear set
• Clutch housing
or
• Tapered roller bearing
Adjustment overview => [ Adjustment Overview ] Adjustment Overview.
Requirements
• Sealing surfaces of clutch and transmission housings must be cleaned of sealant.
- Press small tapered roller bearing outer race with a 0.65 mm thick shim into clutch housing to limit stop=> [ Pressing in small outer race/tapered roller
bearing ] Output Shaft
- Install output shaft and tighten nuts for bearing mount to 25 Nm + an additional 90°.
- Install dial gauge (3 mm measuring range) and set to "0" with 1 mm preload.
- Move output shaft up and down, read off play on dial gauge and note (example: 0.30 mm).
Shim, Determining Thickness
The specified bearing preload is obtained by adding a constant preload figure of (0.20 mm) to the reading obtained (0.30 mm) and the thickness of the shim installed (0.65 mm).
Example:
- Remove output shaft and pull out small outer race for tapered roller bearing.
A Internal puller 37 to 46 mm, e.g. (Kukko 21/6)
B Support, e.g. ( Kukko 22/2)
The following shims are available:
Different tolerances make it possible to measure the required shim size exactly.
- Press in small outer race/tapered roller bearing with determined shim (1.15 mm in example) and install output shaft. Tighten bearing mount nut in clutch housing to 25 Nm and + an additional 90°.
