Condition
Catalytic Converter, Replacement, Rear Oxygen Sensors Not Required
Catalytic Converter (service part) no longer supports rear oxygen sensors.
Technical Background
Early build MY06 Passat were produced with three oxygen sensors per catalytic converter. Only four oxygen sensors (two per converter) are used for OBD. Rear oxygen sensors -arrow- are not monitored by the ECM.
When replacing catalytic converter(s), the unused body harness connector(s) must be weather sealed for harness protection.
Production Solution
Vehicles produced with four oxygen sensors beginning with the following VINs:
^ 3C_6P154907
^ 3C_6E186617
Service
Tip:
This repair requires that the rear oxygen sensor connectors be removed from the oxygen sensors prior to catalytic converter disposal. The connectors will be modified to act as "covers" and "fasteners" for the body harness connectors.
Locate rear oxygen sensor connectors -arrow-
^ Cut off both rear oxygen sensor connectors (sensor side).
^ Remove terminals from rear oxygen sensor connectors (sensor side) using VAS1978/7 terminal removal tool.
^ Install cavity plugs Part No: 357972841 -arrow- from VAS1978 repair kit.
^ After installing plugs, re-install connectors to factory harness bracket.
^ Reconnect body harness to connectors attached to harness bracket.
