Coolant: Service and Repair

Draining and Filling

Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required
- Refractometer (T10007)
- Drip Tray for VAS 6100 (VAS 6208)
- Torque Wrench 5-50 Nm (VAG 1331)
- Hose Clamp Pliers (VAS 6499)
- Adapter (V.A.G 1274/7)
- Cooling System Charge Unit (VAS 6096)

Draining

CAUTION! Hot steam may escape when opening the expansion tank. Wear protective goggles and protective clothing to prevent damage to eyes and scalding. Cover the cap with a cloth and open the cap very carefully.

- Open the cap for the coolant expansion tank.
- Remove the noise insulation.
- Place the (VAS 6208) under the vehicle.
- Disconnect the electrical connector - 1 - and then the coolant hose - arrow - from the bottom of the radiator.

- Observe disposal regulations for coolant!

Filling

CAUTION! A new coolant additive (G12 plus-plus) which must be used has be implemented in this vehicle. If the conventional G12 is used, it can cause the Climatronic to malfunction.

- Only G12 plus-plus conforming to "TL VW 774 G" must be used as a coolant additive.

- G 12 plus-plus marked "in accordance with TL VW 774 F" prevents freeze and corrosion damage, scaling and also raise the boiling point of the coolant. For this reason the system must be filled all year round with frost and corrosion protection additives.

- Because of its high boiling point, the coolant improves engine reliability under heavy loads, particularly in countries with tropical climates.

- Protection against frost must be assured to about -25°C (in arctic climatic countries to about -35°C).

- The coolant concentration must not be reduced by adding water even in warmer seasons and in warmer countries. The coolant additive portion must be at least 40%.

- If for climatic reasons greater frost protection is required, the amount of G 12 plus-plus can be increased, but only up to 60% (frost protection to about -40°C), otherwise frost protection and cooling effectiveness will be reduced.

- If the radiator, heat exchanger, cylinder head or cylinder head gasket is replaced, do not reuse the old coolant.

- Refractometer (T10007) is recommended for determining freeze protection density.

Recommended Mixture Ratios
- The quantity of coolant can vary depending upon the vehicle equipment.

Procedure
- Install the coolant hose and secure.
- Install the (VAG 1274/7) onto the expansion tank.
- Fill the coolant circuit using the (VAS 6096).
