Engine Lubrication: Description and Operation
Lubrication System
• Secure engine to engine and transmission stand (VAS 6095) when working on engine.
• The oil level must not be above the max. mark - danger of damage to catalytic converter!
• If large quantities of metal particles or abraded material are detected during engine repairs, it may be an indication for a damaged crankshaft or rod bearings. To prevent further damage, perform the following steps after the repair:
• Carefully clean oil passages
• Replace oil check valve
• Replace oil injection jets
• Replace oil cooler
• Replace oil filter
Oil Capacities
With oil filter 6.6 liters.
Engine Oil Specifications
Use "long life engine oils" in compliance with VW standard (503 00).
• The engine is filled at the factory with engine oil complying to VW standard (503 00).
• Engine oils complying to VW standards (500 00), (501 01) and (502 00) may continue to be used. These oils must be changed every 12 months or every 15,000 km.
• For changing, engine oil "ILSAC GF3 with viscosity rating SAE 5W-40" can be used. The service interval display must be programmed correspondingly.
• For topping off, engine oil "ILSAC GF3 with viscosity rating SAE 5W-30" can be used.
