Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required
• Camshaft Bar (T10068 A)
Sequence
- Remove the intake manifold and the cylinder head cover. Refer to => [ Cylinder Head Cover ] Cylinder Head Cover.
- Rotate the crankshaft at the vibration damper bolt in engine rotation direction to the Top Dead Center (TDC) cylinder 1 mark - arrow -.
The camshaft lobes - A - for cylinder 1 must face each other.
- Insert the (T10068 A) into both camshaft grooves.
• Due to the camshaft adjuster function, the camshaft grooves may not be perfectly horizontal. Therefore, if necessary, rotate the camshaft back and forth - arrows - slightly using an open end wrench in order to install the (T10068 A).
Verify the installation markings of the camshaft adjuster with the marks on the control housing:
• The "arrow" - 1 - on the camshaft adjuster for the intake camshaft must align with the left notch - 2 - on the control housing. Markings on control housing, refer to => [ Marks on Control Housing ].
• The mark - 1 - on the camshaft adjuster for the exhaust camshaft, must align - arrow - with the left notch - 2 - on the control housing. Marks on the control housing, refer to => [ Marks on Control Housing ].
• A small offset between the marking - 1 - and notch - 2 - is permitted.
- The distance between the markings on the camshaft adjuster must be exactly 16 rollers of camshaft timing chain.
• The camshaft front cover is removed in the illustration.
If the marks do not match:
- Adjust the valve timing. Refer to => [ Camshaft Adjuster with Camshaft Timing Chain, Installing ] Camshaft Adjuster with Camshaft Timing Chain, Installing.
If the marks match:
- Install the cylinder head cover and intake manifold. Refer to => [ Cylinder Head Cover ] Cylinder Head Cover.

- B - Vibration damper, side view
Notches - arrows - are reference points for marks on the camshaft adjusters.
