Affected Vehicles
Condition
Igniter, Side Airbag, Diagnostic Trouble Code(s) Stored in DTC Memory
Airbag warning light in instrument cluster is ON and one or both of the DTCs shown above are stored in the DTC memory.
Technical Background
Sporadic "resistance too high" in terminals of connectors for side airbag/seat harness, (Airbag performance is not affected and will continue to operate as designed).
Production Solution
Elimination of T3 connector in production.
Service

Tip:
Record all radio pre-sets and Comfort settings.
Procedure
^ Disconnect battery Ground (GND) strap.
^ Remove seat, see Repair Manual Body Interior Group 72 Seat-Frames.
^ Carefully separate connectors from harness to side airbag igniter -N199- (driver seat) and -N200- (passenger seat).
Tip:
The pictures are used to illustrate connector location only, seat does not have to be disassembled for repair.
Rabbit/new GTI/Eos ONLY:
^ Remove male and female side connectors T3K (N199-drivers side), T3L (N200 passenger side, as shown) by cutting one wire at a time, discard connectors.
Jetta ONLY:
^ Remove male and female side connectors T3aa, T3ab (as shown) by cutting one wire at a time, discard connectors.
Passat ONLY:
^ Remove male and female side connectors T3 (N199-drivers side), T3a (N200-pass. side, as shown) by cutting one wire at a time discard connectors.
^ Using butt splice crimping tool VAS 1978/24: Splice the harness together using three 4 in. sections of Repair wire Part No: 000 979 010 (from VAS 1978AR wiring repair kit) and 6 butt connectors Part No: 111 971 941A harness repair kit 1978.
The 4 in. sections of repair wire allow additional wiring harness maneuverability.
^ Check the connectors from the airbag harness to the body harness for proper connection on both seats.
^ Wrap all repaired wires using yellow electrical tape to indicate that the wiring has been modified.
^ Secure the harness with tie straps.
^ Install seats, see Repair Manual Body Interior Group 72 Seat-Frames.
WARNING
Ensure that there is no person inside the vehicle when connecting the Battery Ground (GND) strap.
^ Switch ignition ON.
^ Reinstall battery Ground (GND) Strap.
^ Connect the VAS 5051 or VAS 5052 Diagnostic tool.
^ Check and clear any stored DTCs and verify repair.
Post procedure component reset/relearn (after battery Ground (GND) Disconnect)
Front windows "One touch feature".
With vehicle idling:
^ Fully open both front windows.
^ Fully close both front windows.
^ Fully open both rear windows (Jetta / Eos Only).
^ Fully close both rear windows (Jetta / Eos Only).
Electronic front seat (if equipped) "Soft stop" function (Jetta / Eos Only).
With vehicle idling:
^ Hold seat "forward/backward" switch in forward position until front seat moves fully forward and seat stops.
^ Release switch.
^ Hold seat "forward/backward" switch in forward position to ensure front seat is in fully forward position.
^ Release switch.
Forward soft stop position is learned.
^ Hold seat "forward/backward" switch in backward position until front seat moves fully backward and seat stops.
^ Release switch.
^ Hold seat "forward/backward" switch in backward position to ensure front seat is in fully backward position.
^ Release switch.
Backward soft stop position is learned.
^ Hold seat "upward/downward" switch in upward position until front seat moves to the full upward position.
^ Release switch.
Upward soft stop position is learned.
^ Hold seat "upward/downward" switch in downward position until front seat moves to the full downward position.
^ Release switch.
Downward soft stop position is learned.
^ Repeat steps for other front seat.
Steering Angle Sensor
Steering angle sensor will temporarily lose calibration (light will illuminate) and must relearn its position. Drive the vehicle forward with wheels in the straight forward position for 13.7M (45 ft.).
