Battery Resting Voltage, Checking

Battery, Checking

CAUTION!
Risk of injury. Observe warning notes and safety precautions, refer to => [ Warnings and Safety Precautions ] Battery A!

CAUTION!
In order to prevent damage to the Battery (A) or vehicle, observe battery type descriptions and notes, refer to => [ Battery Types ] Battery Types.

Perform battery checks in the following sequence:

- Visual check, refer to => [ Inspecting ]. Inspecting

- Battery (A) with Visual Indicator, Checking, refer to=> [ Battery With Visual Indicator, Checking ] Battery With Visual Indicator, Checking and Maintenance-Free Battery (A), Checking, refer to => [ Low-Maintenance Battery A, Checking ]. Low-Maintenance Battery A, Checking

- Battery (A) no load voltage, testing, refer to => [ Battery Resting Voltage, Checking ].

- Battery load test with (VAS 5097 A).

Battery Resting Voltage, Checking

Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required

Hand-Held Multimeter (VAG 1526 B)

CAUTION!
Risk of injury. Observe warning notes and safety precautions. Refer to => [ Warnings and Safety Precautions ] Battery A!

The no load voltage test determines the performance capacity of the Battery (A).

The Battery (A) to be tested must not have been charged or discharged for at least 2 hours before testing. Charging or discharging within two hours prior to performing test will result in erroneous results.

CAUTION!
Turn off the ignition and all electrical components.

Remove the ignition key.

Procedure

- Disconnect the Battery (A). Refer to => [ Battery A, Disconnecting and Connecting ] Battery A, Disconnecting and Connecting.

- Wait at least 2 hours. The Battery (A) must not be charged or discharged during this time.

- Measure the Battery (A) no-load voltage with the Hand-Held Multimeter (VAG 1526 B).

If the Battery (A) was charged based on the result of the no load voltage measurement, proceed as follows:

- Wait at least 2 hours. The Battery (A) must not be charged or discharged during this time.

- Measure the Battery (A) no-load voltage again with the (VAG 1526 B).

If the Battery (A) resting voltage is less than 12.5 V after charging, replace it. Refer to => [ Battery A ] Removal and Replacement.
