Motronic Engine Control Module J623, Replacing

Removing

Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required

Heat gun.

When the Motronic Engine Control Module (ECM) (J623) electrical harness connectors are disconnected, the adaptation values are erased and the DTC memory content remains intact.

Work procedure

Check the identification of the previous Motronic Engine Control Module (ECM) (J623) as follows:

- Connect the scan tool.

- Switch the ignition on.

- Using the scan tool, select "Vehicle information".

- Select " Calibration Identification" in vehicle information.

The electronic control module identification number will be displayed.

- Record the electronic control module identification number.

- End diagnosis and switch the ignition off.

Procedure

The Motronic Engine Control Module (ECM) (J623) may be equipped with or without an Antitheft bracket or locking plate. Refer to the following removal and installation procedures:

For Motronic Engine Control Module (ECM) (J623) without Antitheft brackets.

For Motronic Engine Control Module (ECM) (J623) with an Antitheft bracket.

For Motronic Engine Control Module (ECM) (J623) with an Antitheft locking plate.

Motronic Engine Control Module (ECM) (J623) removing and installing without Antitheft brackets.

- Remove the wiper arms.

- Remove the plenum chamber cover.

- Disconnect the Heated Windshield Control Module (J505) electrical harness connector - 1 -.





- Disconnect the Motronic Engine Control Module (ECM) (J623) electrical harness connectors - 2 -.

- Remove the Motronic Engine Control Module (ECM) (J623) retaining screws - 3 -.

- Press the Motronic Engine Control Module (ECM) (J623) retaining catches - 1 - out and remove the Motronic Engine Control Module (ECM) (J623) - 2 - from the mounting frame in the direction of the - arrow -.





Installation

- Install the Motronic Engine Control Module (ECM) (J623) - 1 - into the Motronic Engine Control Module (ECM) (J623) mounting frame in the direction of the - arrow -.





- Install the Motronic Engine Control Module (ECM) (J623) assembly with the retaining screws - 3 -.





- Tighten the retaining screws - 3 - to 6 Nm.

- Connect the Motronic Engine Control Module (ECM) (J623) electrical harness connectors - 2 -.

- Connect the Heated Windshield Control Module (J505) electrical harness connector - 1 -.

- Install the plenum chamber cover.

- Install the wiper arms.

- Reprogram the Motronic Engine Control Module (ECM) (J623).

Motronic Engine Control Module (ECM) (J623) removing and installing with Antitheft bracket.

- Remove the wiper arms.

- Remove the plenum chamber cover.

- Remove the Motronic Engine Control Module (ECM) (J623) retaining screws - 1 -.





- Press the Motronic Engine Control Module (ECM) (J623) retaining catches out - arrows - and partially remove the Motronic Engine Control Module (ECM) (J623) from the mounting frame.

- Bend the raised ends - 1 - of the locking bracket outward.





- Using locking pliers, remove the shear bolts - 2 - and the locking bracket.

- Disconnect the Motronic Engine Control Module (ECM) (J623) electrical harness connectors - 1 -.





- Remove the Motronic Engine Control Module (ECM) (J623) from the mounting frame.

Installation

- Install the Motronic Engine Control Module (ECM) (J623) - 1 - into the Motronic Engine Control Module (ECM) (J623) mounting frame in the direction of the - arrow -.





- Install the Motronic Engine Control Module (ECM) (J623) assembly with the retaining screws - 1 -.





- Tighten the retaining screws - 1 - to 6 Nm.

- Connect the Motronic Engine Control Module (ECM) (J623) electrical harness connectors - 1 -.





Use New shear bolts when installing the Motronic Engine Control Module (ECM) (J623).

- Install the locking bracket - 1 - to the Motronic Engine Control Module (ECM) (J623) with NEW Shear bolts - 2 -.





- Tighten the NEW shear bolts - 2 - evenly until the bolt head shears off.

- Install the plenum chamber cover.

- Install the wiper arms.

- Reprogram the Motronic Engine Control Module (ECM) (J623).

Motronic Engine Control Module (ECM) (J623) removing and installing with Antitheft locking plate.

- Remove the wiper arms.

- Remove the plenum chamber cover.

CAUTION!
The shear bolts are coated with a locking compound and require heating. Do not heat the Engine Control Module (ECM) (J623) or damage to the Engine Control Module (ECM) (J623) may occur.

To avoid damage (burning) of wire connections and harness connectors, insulation and control modules, the following work steps must be adhered to exactly! Observe operating instructions for heat gun.

CAUTION!
After heating, parts are extremely hot. To prevent personal injury, avoid touching the protective housing after heating the shear bolts and surrounding area.

- Using a Heat gun set at its lowest setting, heat the shear bolt for approx. 20 to 25 seconds.

- Using locking pliers, remove the shear bolts - 2 -. Discard used shear bolts.





- Disconnect the Heated Windshield Control Module (J505) electrical harness connector - 1 -.

- Remove the locking plate - 1 -.





- Disconnect the Motronic Engine Control Module (ECM) (J623) electrical harness connectors - 1 -.





- Press the Motronic Engine Control Module (ECM) (J623) retaining catches - 1 - out and remove the Motronic Engine Control Module (ECM) (J623) - 2 - from the mounting frame in the direction of the - arrow -.





Installation

- Install the Motronic Engine Control Module (ECM) (J623) - 1 - into the Motronic Engine Control Module (ECM) (J623) mounting frame in the direction of the - arrow -.





- Connect the Motronic Engine Control Module (ECM) (J623) electrical harness connectors - 1 -.





- Install the locking plate.





Use New shear bolts when installing the Motronic Engine Control Module (ECM) (J623).

- Install the locking plate with NEW Shear bolts - 2 -.





- Tighten the NEW shear bolts - 2 - evenly until the bolt head shears off.

- Connect the Heated Windshield Control Module (J505) electrical harness connector - 1 -.

- Install the plenum chamber cover.

- Install the wiper arms.

- Reprogram the Motronic Engine Control Module (ECM) (J623).

Motronic Engine Control Module (ECM) (J623) reprogramming.

- The New Engine Control Module (ECM) (J623) and immobilizer must be activated.

- Assembly is performed in the reverse of the removal.

Final Procedures

After the repair work, the following work steps must be performed in the following sequence:

1. Check the DTC memory. Refer to => [ Diagnostic Mode 03 - Read DTC Memory ] Diagnostic Mode 03 - Read DTC Memory.

2. If necessary, erase the DTC memory. Refer to => [ Diagnostic Mode 04 - Erase DTC Memory ] Diagnostic Mode 04 - Erase DTC Memory.

3. If the DTC memory was erased, generate readiness code. Refer to => [ Readiness Code ] Readiness Code.
