Vehicle Information

Condition

Update Programming, Electromechanical Parking Brake (EPB), to Prevent False DTCs

After engine start, the warning light for the EPB illuminates.
The fault may also occur during an attempt to retract rear caliper pistons during new brake pad installation.





One or more of the fault codes may be stored in the EPB control module:

DO NOT diagnose or replace EPB system components before performing the update function as explained in this bulletin.

Technical Background

EPB control module responds too sensitively to low voltage conditions.

EPB control module Part No. 3C0907801 suffix B and E are affected.

Production Solution

Improved software installed with less sensitivity to low voltage.

Service

PROCEDURE:

The following items must be observed during and after the update - programming:

1. VAS 5051/5052 Minimum Base CD Version 10.00.00 and Brand CD
V.10.76.00.

2. Parking brake must be released.

3. The parking brake update is performed in several stages.

4. During the first stage, the update may fail. Restart the procedure and it will begin programming.

5. The procedure has to be performed three times to properly update the control module. The program installs three new software levels in sequence, if the update program ends prematurely, restart it.

6. Never interrupt update programming while the status bar displays the progress

Vehicle requirements

Battery MUST have minimum no-load charge of 12.5V (failure to maintain voltage during update process can lead to ECM failure) (use an approved battery charger INC940 to maintain battery voltage).

VAS 5051: connected to vehicle and to 110V AC Power supply at all times during procedure.

VAS 5052: connected to vehicle with battery voltage requirements met.

Any appliances with high electromagnetic radiation (i.e. mobile phones) switched OFF.

When performing the update programming procedure, ALL DTCs for all systems are erased.

DTCs linked to Guided Fault Finding function tests will be lost. Therefore, always address stored DTCs for Customer concerns unrelated to the update programming procedure first.

Note:
Nonobservance of the following points may lead to ECM failure! VAS 5051 or VAS 5052 must always be connected to the approved power supply at the approved voltages. Under no circumstances should the power supply be interrupted or the diagnostic connector unplugged during the update programming procedure. Any appliances with high electromagnetic radiation (i.e. mobile phones) must be switched OFF.

Tip:
The SVM Process must be completed in its entirety so the database receives the update confirmation response. A warranty claim may not be reimbursed if there is no confirmation response to support the claim. ^ Update the EPB Control Module using the SVM Unit code as listed in the table shown.

The procedure can be found in GFF under Functions/ Component Selection, Software Version Management, Adjust Software.

Tip:
When checking the diagnosis address enter address code 53 - Electromechanical Parking Brake.

After successfully updating the EPB Control Module the following systems must be adjusted in the correct order:

1. Basic settings of Longitudinal acceleration sender -G251-.

2. Basic settings of brake system.

3. Code Control Unit -J540- with AUTO-HOLD function.
