Oil Pressure Sender: Testing and Inspection
Oil Pressure Switch and Pressure, Checking
Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required
• Oil Pressure Gauge (V.A.G 1342)
• Adapter (V.A.G 1342/14)
• Voltage Tester (V.A.G 1527 B)
• Connector Test Set (V.A.G 1594C)
• Function test and servicing the optical and acoustic oil pressure indicator.
Conditions
• Engine oil level OK, checking, refer to => [ Engine Oil ] Description and Operation.
• Engine oil temperature at least 80 °C (176 °F) (radiator fan must start up once).
• Selector lever must be in the "P" or "N" position.
Oil Pressure Switch, Checking
- Remove the noise insulation.
- Remove the plug - item 8 -=> [ Plug ] Service and Repair from the oil filter housing.
- Install the plug to the oil pressure switch test hole on the (V.A.G 1342).
- Install the (V.A.G 1342) with (V.A.G 1342/14) into the oil filter housing in place of the plug.
• Pay attention to the installed position of the adapter: the cone-shaped connection on the adapter is attached to the tester pressure hose.
- Connect the brown wire on the tester to ground (-).
- Connect the (V.A.G 1527B) to the battery positive terminal (connection in engine compartment - arrow -) and the oil pressure switch using adapter cables from (V.A.G 1594C). Light Emitting Diode (LED) must not light up.
If the LED lights up:
- Replace the oil pressure switch (F1) - item 2 -=> [ ] Service and Repair.
If the LED does not light up:
• While starting engine, watch the (V.A.G 1342) and LED as the switch point of the oil pressure switch may already be exceeded during start.
- Start the engine and run at idle speed. The LED must light up at 0.7 to 1.1 bar pressure. Replace the oil pressure switch if it does not. Refer to - item 2 -=> [ ] Service and Repair.
Oil Pressure, Checking:
- Check oil pressure at different speeds:
• 1500 RPM: minimum 1.7 bar
• 2000 RPM: 3.0 to 5.5 bar
• above 2000 RPM: maximum 7.0 bar
- If the specified values are not reached:
- First check the control piston for the oil pressure relief valve in the oil pump for contamination.
- To do so, first remove the plug from the cylinder block, then remove the plug from the oil pump.
• The control piston for the oil pressure relief valve is spring loaded. Therefore the highest care is required when removing the plug.
• The plug in the oil pump is tightened to 35 Nm.
- Pull the control piston out of the oil pump and remove any contamination as necessary.
- Check the screen inside the suction pipe - item 17 -=> [ Suction Pipe ] Oil Pan, Pump and Filter Housing Overview for dirt.
- Check the oil pipe - item 10 -=> [ Oil Pipe ] Oil Pan, Pump and Filter Housing Overview on the bottom of the cylinder block for leaks. Replace the seals - item 9 -=> [ Seal ] Oil Pan, Pump and Filter Housing Overview if necessary.
- Correct the mechanical damage, for example, bearing damage.
At higher engine speeds the oil pressure must not exceed 7.0 bar
If a malfunction is found despite insufficient oil pressure:
- Replace the oil pump. Refer to => [ Oil Pump ] Service and Repair.
If the specification is exceeded:
- Check the oil passages.
- Replace the oil pump, if necessary. Refer to => [ Oil Pump ] Service and Repair.
