Oil Pump: Service and Repair
Oil Pump
• If the control piston in the oil pump must be checked due to low oil pressure, the oil pump does not need to be removed. The plug in the cylinder block - item 2 -=> [ Plug ] Oil Pan, Pump and Filter Housing Overview can be removed to access the seal in the control piston. The plug in the oil pump is tightened to 35 Nm.
• In order to be able to remove the oil pump, the transmission must be removed.
Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required
• Torque Wrench (5-50 Nm) (V.A.G 1331)
• Puller (T10055)
• M10 x 30 Bolts (commercially available)
Removing
- Remove the transmission side sealing flange. Refer to => [ Sealing Flange, Transmission Side ] Service and Repair.
- Rotate the engine using the vibration damper bolt to the adjusting mark.
• The milled crankshaft sprocket tooth must align with the bearing cap seam - arrow A -.
• The tab on the large sprocket must align with the tab - arrow B - behind it.
• This position is reached at every fourth turn.
- Loosen the oil pump sprocket bolt but do not remove it. To do so, secure the vibration damper using (T10069).
- Mark the position of the timing chain to the oil pump sprockets with a water resistant marker.
- Remove the timing chain tensioner - arrow -.
- Remove the chain tensioner with tensioning rail bolts - arrows -.
- Remove the oil pump sprocket bolt and then remove the sprockets and chains from the oil pump.
- Remove the oil pump bolts - arrows -.
- Install an M10 x 30 bolt (commercially available) - 1 - in the oil pump shaft.
- Install the (T10055) with (T10055/3) onto the threaded bolt.
- Pull the oil pump out of the cylinder block using (T10055) and (T10055/3).
Installing
- Install the oil pump and tighten the bolts - arrows - to - item 4 -=> [ Bolt ] Oil Pan, Pump and Filter Housing Overview.
• The O-ring as well as the bolts for the oil pump and sprockets must be replaced.
• If the camshaft timing chain is to be replaced, then do the following, refer to => [ Primary Chain, Installing ] Service and Repair.
- Install the large sprocket into the chain so that the tab on the sprocket aligns with the mark on the cylinder block - B -. Place the sprocket on the oil pump in this position. The marks made during removal must align.
• The milled crankshaft sprocket tooth must align with the bearing cap seam - arrow A -.
- If the large sprocket cannot be installed, rotate the oil pump slightly.
- Install the small sprocket with the chain installed into the recess - arrow - and install the bolt hand tight. The marks made during removal must align.
- Install the chain tensioner with tensioning rail.
- Release the locking splines of the chain tensioner - A - with a small screwdriver and press the tensioning rail against the chain tensioner.
- Install the chain tensioner in this position and tighten the bolts - arrow - to 8 Nm.
- Install the timing chain tensioner - arrow -.
- Tighten the oil pump sprocket bolt to 60 Nm + 90° (1/4) additional turn. To do so, secure the vibration damper using (T10069). Use strength category 10.9 bolts only.
- Install the transmission side sealing flange. Refer to => [ Installing ] Service and Repair.
Further installation is performed in reverse order.
