Passive Occupant Detection System

Seat occupied recognition controls automatic passenger airbag deactivation.

This equipment is only installed on vehicles released in the USA.

CAUTION!
Observe safety precautions when working on seat occupied recognition. Refer to => [ Passive Occupant Detection System Safety Precautions ] Passive Occupant Detection System (Overview).

Seat cushion, mat for seat occupied recognition, control module and pressure sensor must only be replaced together. Components are complementary and must not be separated!

Only disconnect wiring harnesses mentioned in the following description!

- Disconnect vehicle battery.

- Mount the (VAS 6136) on the (VAS 6095).

- Remove front seat. Refer to => [ Front Seat ] Front Seats

- Attach the seat to the (VAS 6136).

- Remove the front seat belt latch. Refer to => [ Front Seat Belt Latches ] Service and Repair

- Remove seat cap. Refer to => [ Cover Cap ] Front Seats

- Remove height-adjustable seat trim. Refer to => [ Height-Adjustable Seat Trim ] Front Seats

- Remove bracket and actuating lever, trim of partially electric/height adjustable seat. Refer to => [ Power Height-Adjustable Seat Trim Bracket and Operating Lever ] Front Seats

- Depending on vehicle equipment, operate locking mechanisms of individual harness connectors and disconnect the corresponding wiring harnesses from main wiring harness - 1 -.

- Loosen main wiring harness from seat frame.

- Disconnect individual harness connectors from wiring harness of backrest - 2 - on seat frame.

- Disengage wiring harness of backrest from seat frame.





- Remove front seat backrest. Refer to => [ Left Front Seat Backrest ] Front Seats

- Remove cover from front seat cushion. Refer to => [ Front Seat Cushion ] Front Seat Cover and Upholstery, upholstery must not be removed from seat frame while doing so!

- Disconnect pressure hose - 6 -.





- Disconnect wiring harness in vehicles with seat heater - 3 -.

- In vehicles with seat heater, disconnect wiring harness of heated backrest - 4 -.

- Cut through holding strap of main wiring harness - 2 -.

- Slide white holding plate - 1 - toward left and remove holding plate from seat frame.

- Remove connector from holding plate.

CAUTION!
Do not disconnect connector from Seat Occupied Recognition Control Module (J706).





- Remove Seat Occupied Recognition Pressure Sensor (G452) - 5 - from bracket. Do not disconnect connectors - 3 - and - 4 - from Seat Occupied Recognition Pressure Sensor (G452) and from Seat Occupied Recognition Control Module (J706)!

- Remove the two bolts - 1 - (1.5 Nm).





- Slightly lift upholstery - 1 -, make sure that upholstery is not separated from mat for seat occupied recognition - 4 -.

- Loosen clamps - 2 - from seat frame - 5 -. Clamp - 3 - must not be loosened!

CAUTION!
Do not damage seals when assembling or disassembling.

Seat cushion, mat for seat occupied recognition, pressure hose, Seat Occupied Recognition Pressure Sensor (G452) and Seat Occupied Recognition Control Module (J706) must not be separated!





- Remove bolts - 1 - (2.5 Nm) and loosen Seat Occupied Recognition Control Module (J706).





- Remove upholstery - 1 - and mat for seat occupied recognition - 4 - from seat frame.

- Guide pressure hose - 6 -, Seat Occupied Recognition Pressure Sensor (G452)- 7 -, Seat Occupied Recognition Control Module (J706) - 9 - and wiring harness - 8 - - in direction of arrow - through hole in seat frame - 5 -.





Passive Occupant Detection System Repair Kit, Manual Seats

When installing, there must be no wiring harness of seat heater between upholstery and mat for seat occupied recognition.

Pressure hose must be routed without kinking.

Stickers with notes on harness connectors must not be damaged.

After vehicle was connected to electrical system, check replaced components for freedom of movement by moving seat.

After replacing seat occupied recognition, basic setting of seat occupied recognition must be performed using diagnostic tester containing "Guided Fault Finding".

CAUTION!
Basic setting must be performed when seat is not occupied.

To install, perform the steps used for removal in reverse order.

While doing so, observe the following notes.

- Secure insert profile - 2 - to seat frame - 1 - as shown, using double-sided adhesive tape - 3 -.





- Connect pressure hose - 6 -. Brackets must be reinstalled, from Seat Occupied Recognition Pressure Sensor (G452)- 5 - to wiring harness connector - 3 -.





- Switch on ignition.

CAUTION!
Make sure that no persons are in the vehicle.

Do not damage seals when assembling or disassembling.

- Connect vehicle battery.

CAUTION!

Seat cushion, mat for seat occupied recognition, control module and pressure sensor must only be replaced together. Components are complementary and must not be separated!

Only disconnect wiring harnesses mentioned in the following description!

- Mount the (VAS 6136) on the (VAS 6095).

- Perform the following seat adjustment:

Seat height: highest position

Seat tilt: highest position

- Remove front seat. Refer to => [ Front Seat ] Front Seats

- Attach the seat to the (VAS 6136).

- Remove the front seat belt latch. Refer to => [ Front Seat Belt Latches ] Service and Repair

- Remove seat cap. Refer to => [ Cover Cap ] Front Seats

- Remove electric seat front end trim. Refer to=> [ Power Seat Front Side Trim ] Front Seats

- Remove electric seat trim. Refer to => [ Power Seat Trim ] Front Seats

- Remove electric seat trim bracket. Refer to => [ Power Seat Trim Bracket ] Front Seats

- Disconnect connector - 1 - from height adjustment motor.





- Depending on vehicle equipment, operate locking mechanisms of individual harness connectors and disconnect the corresponding wiring harnesses from main wiring harness - 1 -.

- Loosen main wiring harness from seat frame.

- Disconnect individual harness connectors from wiring harness of backrest - 2 - on seat frame.

White mount must not be loosened.

- Disengage wiring harness of backrest from seat frame.





- Remove front seat backrest. Refer to => [ Left Front Seat Backrest ] Front Seats

- Remove cover from front seat cushion. Refer to => [ Front Seat Cushion ] Front Seat Cover and Upholstery, upholstery must not be removed from seat frame while doing so!

CAUTION!
Do not disconnect connector from Seat Occupied Recognition Control Module (J706).

- Disconnect pressure hose - 1 - from guide.

- Remove Seat Occupied Recognition Pressure Sensor (G452) - 4 - from bracket. Connectors must not be disconnected from Seat Occupied Recognition Pressure Sensor (G452) and Seat Occupied Recognition Control Module (J706) - 5 -!

- Remove the bolts - 2 - and - 3 - (1.5 Nm).

CAUTION!
Seals - 6 - must not be operated.





- Remove white mount - 1 - from seat frame.





- Disconnect wiring harness in vehicles with seat heater - 3 -.

- In vehicles with seat heater, disconnect wiring harness of heated backrest - 4 -.

- Slide white holding plate - 1 - toward left and remove holding plate from seat frame.

- Cut through holding strap of main wiring harness - 2 -.





- Slightly lift upholstery - 1 -, make sure that upholstery is not separated from mat for seat occupied recognition - 4 -.

- Loosen clamps - 2 - from seat frame - 5 -. Clamp - 3 - must not be loosened!

CAUTION!
Seat cushion, mat for seat occupied recognition, pressure hose, Seat Occupied Recognition Pressure Sensor (G452) and Seat Occupied Recognition Control Module (J706) must not be separated!





- Remove upholstery - 1 - and mat for seat occupied recognition - 4 - from seat frame.

- Guide pressure hose - 6 -, Seat Occupied Recognition Pressure Sensor (G452)- 7 -, Seat Occupied Recognition Control Module (J706) - 9 - and wiring harness - 8 - - in direction of arrow - through hole in seat frame - 5 -.





Passive Occupant Detection System Repair Kit, Power Seats

When installing, there must be no wiring harness of seat heater between upholstery and mat for seat occupied recognition.

Pressure hose must be routed without kinking.

After vehicle was connected to electrical system, check replaced components for freedom of movement by moving seat.
