Transmission Position Sensor/Switch: Testing and Inspection
Multi-Function Transmission Range (TR) Switch, checking
Recommended special tools and equipment
- V.A.G 1526 multimeter or V.A.G 1715 multimeter
- V.A.G 1594 connector test kit
- Wiring diagram
Test requirements
- Corresponding fuses on fuse holder in instrument panel, left side, for Multi-Function Transmission Range (TR) Switch -F125- must be OK.
NOTE: Fuses on this fuse holder are labelled "SC" in the wiring diagram.
- Instrument Cluster Control Module -J285- must be OK.
- Battery voltage must be at least 11.5 Volts.
- All electrical consumers such as, for example, lights and rear window defroster must be switched off.
- Selector lever must be in -P- position.
- Ground (GND) connections to transmission must be OK.
- Ignition switched off.
Function test
- Observe safety precautions.
- Observe rules for cleanliness.
- Switch ignition on.
- Depress brake pedal and maintain depressed.
- Shift into all selector lever positions.
- Selector lever position must correspond to display of Instrument Cluster Control Module -J285-.
- Switch ignition off.
If selector lever position does not correspond to display of Instrument Cluster Control Module -J285-:
- Disconnect 10-pin connector -5- from Multi-Function Transmission Range (TR) Switch -F125-.
- Check harness connector for contact corrosion and ingress of water.
If harness connector is not OK:
- Repair malfunction and repeat test sequence.
- Erase DTC memory of Transmission Control Module (TCM), Diagnostic mode 4: Reset/erase diagnostic data. Diagnostic Mode 04 - Erase DTC Memory
- Generate readiness code. Monitors, Trips, Drive Cycles and Readiness Codes
If harness connector is OK:
- Check wires to Transmission Control Module (TCM) according to wiring diagram.
Checking wires to Transmission Control Module (TCM)
- Connect test box to control module wiring harness, connect test box for wiring test.
- Check wires between test box and 10-pin connector to Transmission Control Module (TCM) for open circuit according to wiring diagram.

Wire resistance: max. 3.0 ohms
- Also check wires for short circuit to each other.
Specified value: infinity ohms
If no malfunctions are found in wires:
- Check adjustment of Multi-Function Transmission Range (TR) Switch -F125-, replacing multi-function switch.
- Check adjustment of selector lever cable
- Erase DTC memory of Transmission Control Module (TCM), Diagnostic mode 4: Reset/erase diagnostic data. Diagnostic Mode 04 - Erase DTC Memory
- Generate readiness code. Monitors, Trips, Drive Cycles and Readiness Codes
If no malfunctions are detected in wires and adjustments of selector lever cable and Multi-Function Transmission Range (TR) Switch are OK:
- Replace Multi-Function Transmission Range (TR) Switch -F125-, replacing multi-function switch.
- Erase DTC memory of Transmission Control Module (TCM), Diagnostic mode 4: Reset/erase diagnostic data. Diagnostic Mode 04 - Erase DTC Memory
- Generate readiness code. Monitors, Trips, Drive Cycles and Readiness Codes
