Timing Components: Testing and Inspection

Valve Timing, Checking

Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required

• Camshaft bar (T10068 A)

Test Sequence

- Remove insulation panel.

- Remove intake manifold. Refer to --> [ Intake Manifold ] Intake Manifold.

- Remove cylinder head cover. Refer to --> [ Cylinder Head Cover ] Service and Repair.

- Adjust the crankshaft at the vibration damper bolt in the direction of engine rotation to the Top Dead Center (TDC) cylinder 1 marking - arrow -.





Cams - A - of cylinder 1 must face each other.





- Insert thecamshaft bar (T10068 A) into both shaft grooves.





• Due to the camshaft adjuster function, the camshaft grooves may not be perfectly horizontal. Therefore, if necessary, turn the camshaft back and forth - arrows - slightly with an open end wrench in order to insert the camshaft bar (T10068 A).





Verify the installation markings of the camshaft adjuster with the markings on the control housing:

• The "arrow" - item 1 - on the intake camshaft adjuster must align with the notch - 2 - on the far right of the control housing. Markings on control housing, refer to --> [ Markings on Control Housing ]





• The marking - 1 - on the exhaust camshaft adjuster which the "arrow" points to must align with the notch - 2 - on the far right of the control housing. Markings on control housing, refer to --> [ Markings on Control Housing ]





• A small offset between the marking - 1 - and notch - 2 - is permitted.

- The distance between the markings on the camshaft adjuster must be exactly 16 rollers of camshaft timing chain.





If the markings do not match:

- Reinstall adjuster with camshaft drive timing chain. Refer to --> [ Camshaft Adjuster with Camshaft Drive Timing Chain, Installing ] Camshaft Adjuster with Camshaft Drive Timing Chain, Installing.

If the markings match:

- Install cylinder head cover. Refer to --> [ Cylinder Head Cover ] Service and Repair.

- Install intake manifold. Refer to --> [ Intake Manifold ] Intake Manifold.
