Compression Check: Testing and Inspection
Compression, Checking
Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required
• Spark plug removal tool (3122 B)
• Puller (T10095 A)
• Assembly tool (T10118)
• Torque wrench (VAG 1331)
• Compression tester (VAG 1763)
Test Conditions
• Engine oil temperature at least 30 °C
• The battery voltage must be at least 11.5 V.
• All electrical components such as, for example, lights and rear window defroster must be switched off.
• If vehicle is equipped with an Air Conditioning (A/C), it must be switched off.
• Selector lever must be in the "P" or "N" position.
Test Sequence
- Remove fuel pump fastener from fuse holder.
Voltage supply to fuel pump activation is interrupted when fuse is removed.
- Place assembly tool (T10118) on locking button - arrow - and carefully pull down harness connector.
- Slide on puller for ignition coil (T10095 A) from straight connector side in direction of arrow and pull out ignition coil with power output stage.
- Remove spark plugs using spark plug removal tool (3122 B).
- Check compression pressure using the compression tester (VAG 1763).
• Using tester --> operating instructions.
- Let a second mechanic operate the starter just as long until a pressure increase is no longer indicated on the tester.
Compression Pressure
- Install the spark plugs using the spark plug removal tool (3122 B) and tighten to 20 Nm.
- Now install ignition coils with power output stage.
- To install, insert ignition coil with power output stage into corresponding spark plug shaft so that straight connector sides fit with each other - arrows -.
After test is completed:
- Connect vehicle diagnosis and service system (VAS 5052).
- Perform vehicle system test. Refer to " Guided Fault Finding".
- End vehicle system test, this will automatically erase Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) entries which occurred during the assembly.
- Generate readiness code in connection with road test.
Observe safety precautions that apply to road tests.
- Then perform vehicle system test anew and repair any occurring malfunctions if necessary.
