Left and Right Timing Chain Covers






Left and Right Timing Chain Covers

Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required

Hand drill with plastic brush attachment

Protective eyewear

Sealant.

Removing

Removal and installation is only possible with engine removed.

All cable ties opened or removed during engine removal must be reinstalled at the same locations during installation.

- Remove engine. Refer to --> [ Engine, Removing ] Engine Removing

- Drain the cooling system. Refer to --> [ Cooling System, Draining and Filling ] Procedures.

- Remove left coolant pipe. Refer to --> [ Left Coolant Pipe ] Left Coolant Pipe.

- Remove right coolant pipe. Refer to --> [ Right Coolant Pipe ] Right Coolant Pipe.

- Remove rear coolant pipe. Refer to --> [ Rear Coolant Pipe ] Rear Coolant Pipe.

- Remove bolts - 1 through 8 - and remove left timing chain cover.





- Remove bolts - 1 through 8 - and remove right timing chain cover.





Installing

Replace O-rings.

Secure all hose connections with hose clamps appropriate for the model.

During installation, all cable ties must be reinstalled at the same location.

CAUTION!
Wear safety glasses.

- Remove sealant residue on the timing chain covers and cylinder head, e.g. with a rotating plastic brush.





CAUTION!
Make sure that no sealant residue enters the engine.

- Clean the sealing surfaces, they must be free of oil and grease.

- Cut tube nozzle at front marking (nozzle dia. approximately 2 mm).





- Drive left coolant intermediate pipe - 2 - out of left timing chain cover with a suitable drift.

- Replace O-rings - 1 - at coolant intermediate pipe.

- Insert coolant intermediate pipe in left timing chain cover.

- Apply sealant bead - arrow - on clean sealing surfaces of left timing chain cover, as shown in illustration.





Thickness of sealant bead: 2.5 mm.

Covers for timing chain must be installed within 5 minutes after applying sealant.

- Position left timing chain cover and tighten bolts - 1 through 8 - in sequence.





- Drive right coolant intermediate pipe - 2 - out of right timing chain cover with a suitable drift.





- Replace O-rings - 1 - at coolant intermediate pipe - 2 -.

- Insert coolant intermediate pipe in right timing chain cover.

- Apply sealant bead - arrows - on clean sealing surfaces of right timing chain cover, as shown in illustration.

Thickness of sealant bead: 2.5 mm.

- Position right timing chain cover and tighten bolts - 1 through 8 - in sequence.





The rest of the installation is performed in reverse order of removal, noting the following:

- Install rear coolant pipe. Refer to --> [ Rear Coolant Pipe ] Rear Coolant Pipe.

- Install left coolant pipe. Refer to --> [ Left Coolant Pipe ] Left Coolant Pipe.

- Install right coolant pipe. Refer to --> [ Right Coolant Pipe ] Right Coolant Pipe.

- Install engine. Refer to --> [ Engine, Installing ] Engine Installing.

- Fill cooling system. Refer to --> [ Filling ] Procedures.
