Camshaft, Lifters and Push Rods: Service and Repair
Valvetrain Overview
1 Nut
• 5 Nm + 45° (1/8) additional turn.
2 Exhaust Camshaft Bearing Cap
• Installation sequence, refer to => [ Camshafts ] Service and Repair.
3 Seal
• If the seal is leaking, replace all of them.
• Lightly lubricate the contact surface of the seals when installing the control housing.
• Do not spread the seals excessively when installing.
4 Exhaust Camshaft
• Checking radial clearance using Plastigage, Wear limit: 0.1 mm
• Run-out: maximum 0.04 mm
• Checking axial play, refer to => [ Camshaft Axial Play, Checking ] Service and Repair.
• Identification and timing, refer to => [ Camshaft Identification, Valve Timing ] Service and Repair.
• Removing and installing, refer to => [ Camshafts ] Service and Repair.
5 Control Housing
• Lightly lubricate the contact surfaces of the oil seals before installing.
• Overview, refer to => [ Control Housing Disassembling and Assembling ].
• Check the control housing strainer for contamination before installation. Refer to => [ Control Housing, Checking Strainer for Contaminants ].
• Removing and installing, refer to => [ Camshafts ] Service and Repair.
6 Camshaft Timing Chain
• Mark the direction of rotation before removing (installed position). Refer to => [ Timing Chain Marks ] Chain Drive and Cylinder Block and Lubrication Overview.
• Installing, refer to => [ Intermediate Shaft and Timing Chains, Installing ] Intermediate Shaft and Timing Chains, Installing.
7 Exhaust Camshaft Adjuster
• Identification: 32A
• Rotate engine only with camshaft adjuster and chain installed
• Installing, refer to => [ Camshaft Adjuster with Camshaft Timing Chain, Installing ] Camshaft Adjuster with Camshaft Timing Chain, Installing.
8 Bolt
• Replace
• 60 Nm + 90° (1/4) additional turn
• Contact surface of adjuster and bolt head must be dry when installing.
• To remove and install, counter hold at the camshaft using a 32 mm open end wrench. Refer to => [ Camshafts ] Service and Repair.
9 Intake Camshaft Adjuster
• Identification: 24E
• Rotate the engine only with the camshaft adjuster and chain installed.
• Installing, refer to => [ Camshaft Adjuster with Camshaft Timing Chain, Installing ] Camshaft Adjuster with Camshaft Timing Chain, Installing.
10 Cylinder Head Height
• Minimum height: a = 139.9 mm
11 Valves
• Do not grind, only lapping is permitted.
• Valve dimensions, refer to => [ Valve Dimensions ] Service and Repair.
12 Cylinder Head
• Check for distortion, refer to => [ Checking Cylinder Head for Distortion ] Cylinder Head and Cover Overview.
• Removing and installing, refer to => [ Cylinder Head ] Cylinder Head.
• Refacing valve seats, refer to => [ Valve Seat, Refacing ] Service and Repair.
• After replacing replace entire amount of coolant
13 Support Element
• Before installing, check the camshaft axial play. Refer to => [ Camshaft Axial Play, Checking ] Service and Repair.
• Do not interchange
• With hydraulic valve clearance compensation
14 Valve Stem Seal
• Replacing, refer to => [ Valve Stem Seals ] Service and Repair.
15 Clip
• Check the clip for secure seating.
16 Roller Rocker Lever
• Before installing, check the camshaft axial play. Refer to => [ Camshaft Axial Play, Checking ] Service and Repair.
• Do not interchange
• Check roller for ease of movement
• Lubricate contact surface
• Use securing clip to clip onto the support element when installing
17 Valve Spring
• Note the installed position.

21 Intake Camshaft
• Checking radial clearance using Plastigage, Wear limit: 0.1 mm
• Runout: maximum 0.04 mm

Control Housing Disassembling and Assembling
1 Guide rail: clipped to the control housing
2 Control housing
3 Camshaft adjustment valve 1 (N205)
4 Exhaust camshaft adjustment valve 1 (N318)
5 8 Nm (using locking adhesive (D 000 600 A2) )
Control Housing, Checking Strainer for Contaminants
- Unclip the strainer - 2 - at the rear side of the control housing - 1 - and remove any possible contamination.
