Oil Pressure Sender: Testing and Inspection
Oil Pressure and Oil Pressure Switch, Checking
=> [ Oil Pressure Switch ].
=> [ Oil Pressure ].
Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required
• Oil Pressure Gauge (V.A.G 1342)
• Adapter (V.A.G 1342/14)
• Voltage Tester (V.A.G 1527B)
• Connector Test Set (V.A.G 1594C)
• For the functional check and servicing of the optical and acoustic oil pressure warning.
Test Conditions
• Engine oil level OK
• Engine oil temperature at least 80 °C (176 °F) (radiator fan must start up once).
Oil Pressure Switch
- Bring lock carrier into service position.
- Remove sealing plug => [ (Item 1) Plug ] Oil Filter Bracket Overview from oil filter bracket. Collect escaping engine oil.
- Seal the oil pressure switch test hole on the (V.A.G 1342) with the oil filter bracket sealing plug.
- Install the (V.A.G 1342) with the (V.A.G 1342/14) to the oil filter bracket in place of the plug.
• Pay attention to the installed position of the (V.A.G 1342/14) : the cone shaped connection on the (V.A.G 1342/14) is attached to the (V.A.G 1342) pressure hose.
- Connect the brown wire of the (V.A.G 1342) to Ground (GND).
- Connect the (V.A.G 1527B) to the battery positive terminal (connection in engine compartment - arrow -) and the oil pressure switch using adapter cables from (V.A.G 1594C).
• Light Emitting Diode (LED) must not light up.
If the LED lights up:
- Replace the oil pressure switch (F1) => [ (Item 2) ] Oil Filter Bracket Overview.
If the LED does not light up:
• While starting the engine, watch the (V.A.G 1342) and LED as the switch point of oil pressure switch may already be exceeded during start.
- Start the engine and run at idle speed.
• The LED must light up at 0.7 to 1.1 bar pressure, otherwise replace the oil pressure switch => [ (Item 2) ] Oil Filter Bracket Overview.
Oil Pressure
Procedure
- Install the (V.A.G 1342) with the (V.A.G 1342/14) to the oil filter bracket in place of the plug. Refer to => [ Oil Pressure Switch ].
- Check the oil pressure at different speeds:
• 1500 RPM: minimum 1.7 bar
• 2000 RPM: 3.0 to 5.5 bar
• Above 2000 RPM: maximum 7.0 bar
If the specified values are not reached:
- Check the screen in the oil intake pipe for contamination.
- Ensure the pressure pipe between the oil pump and cylinder block bolts are secure.
• Also, mechanical damage for example bearing damage can also be the cause of too low oil pressure.
If a malfunction is found despite insufficient oil pressure:
- Replace the oil pump. Refer to => [ Oil Pump Overview ] Service and Repair.
The oil pressure must not exceed 7.0 bar.
If 7.0 bar is exceeded:
- Check the oil passages.
Possibly the oil pressure relief valve in the oil pump is plugged.
- Replace the oil pump. Refer to => [ Oil Pump Overview ] Service and Repair.
