Interior - Rear Cup Holder Loose/Broken

Cup Holder, Rear, Loose or Broken
The cup holder (1) in the rear center console is loose or broken.
Technical Background
The rear cup holder is designed to break away during impact (i.e., passenger accidentally kicking, etc.).
Inspect Components
- If mounting of cup holder is only slightly bent, as shown (circle), cup holder will still operate. In this case cup holder can be repaired.
- If mounting of cup holder is severely bent, as shown (circle), replace cup holder.
Production Solution
No production change required.
Service
Repair or Replace Cup Holder
Tip: Under most circumstances the cup holder can be repaired. Replace cup holder only if components are severely damaged or deformed, see Inspect Components above.
Repair instructions:
Disassemble Cup Holder
- Remove cup holder from vehicle, see Repair Manual Group 68, Interior Equipment, in ElsaWeb.
- Slide cover fascia off of cup holder assembly.
- Using a small screw driver as necessary, release both cover locking tabs -arrows-, and remove cover.
NOTE:
- Care must be taken not to damage the cover journals when removing them from the cup holder guides.

- Continue disassembly below.
- Using a small screw driver where indicated -arrows- as necessary, release cover from tray.
Tip: Upon disassembly the tray gear -arrow- may pop out of place and fall into the tray. If this occurs, snap gear back on to tray support.
- Squeeze upper pivots together to release cup holder arms from assembly.
- Inspect all assembly point loops for excessive damage as mentioned in Inspect Components (above).
- If loops are excessively damaged or broken as stated above, replace cup holder.
- If assembly point loops pass component inspection, repair cup holder as follows.
Assembly
- Squeeze pivot and insert into tray support.
- Seat journal into guide hook.
- Insert tray support into tray and insert journals into guide loops where indicated -arrows-.
Tip: Upon assembly the tray support gear -arrow- may pop out of place and fall into the tray. If this occurs, snap gear back onto tray support and continue assembly.
- Attach cup holder arms to pivot.
- Close tray support and listen for an audible click. This action seats the second pivot into place.
Tip: Ensure proper gear -lower arrow-engagement once tray support is seated.
- Position cover journals into guides.
- Using a small screw driver as necessary, seat both cover locking tabs -arrows-.
- Slide cover fascia over cover and seat.
- Ensure proper cup holder operation.
Tip: If cup holder does not operate properly after repair, it must be replaced.
