Windshield Wiper System

Application and Safety Notes


If assembly work is performed on the front windshield wiper system, note the following:

Switch off ignition, switch off all electrical consumers and remove ignition key.

Disconnect the battery. Refer to => [ Disconnecting and Connecting Battery In Engine Compartment ] Disconnecting and Connecting Battery In Engine Compartment or => [ Disconnecting and Connecting Batteries In Luggage Compartment ] Disconnecting and Connecting Batteries In Luggage Compartment.

Follow the procedure in the Repair Information when disconnecting and connecting the battery. General Description

The front windshield wiper system consists of a single motor system with a mechanical connection between wipers.

The Wiper Motor Control Module (J400) is integrated with the Windshield Wiper Motor (V).

The system has several wiper functions:

1. Service-/winter position, wiper arms move to the upper reversing point (is required to remove wiper blades, among others). Refer to => [ Wiper Arm Service-/Winter Position ] Wiper Arm Service-/Winter Position.

2. Alternating park position, wiper park position changes in alternation (to maintain wiper rubber). Refer to => [ Alternating Park Position Of Wiper Motor (APP Function), Deactivating ] Testing and Inspection.

3. Wiper speed switch down as a function of vehicle speed.

4. Speed-dependent interval speeds.


Wiper cannot be activated with hood open and vehicle at standstill.

DTC Recognition and Display

Vehicle Electrical System Control Module (J519) is equipped with On Board Diagnostics (OBD) which assists troubleshooting.

Use the Vehicle Diagnosis, Testing and Information System (VAS 5051A) under "Guided Fault Finding".
