Battery Terminals, Checking for Secure Seating
Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required
• Torque Wrench (V.A.G 1331)
• Tight battery connections assure trouble-free battery function and long service life.
Battery in engine compartment
Perform the following work procedure:
- Operate lock - arrow -, fold up and remove cover toward front.
- Check battery terminal clamps are seated securely on the battery terminals by moving the battery Ground (GND) wire - 1 - and the battery positive wire - 2 - to and fro by hand.
CAUTION!
If battery positive (B+) connection is loose, disconnect ground (GND) cable first before attempting to remove or tighten plus connection, to prevent personal injury.
If the battery clamp on positive terminal is not seated securely:
- First disconnect battery clamp - 1 - at battery minus pole.
- Tighten battery clamp - 2 - on battery positive terminal to 9 Nm.
- Re-connect battery clamp - 1 - on battery negative terminal and tighten to 9 Nm.
If ground connection on battery is not tight:
- Tighten the battery clamp - 1 - on the battery negative terminal to 9 Nm.
- Reinstall cover.
• Follow the steps after connecting the battery: "Electrical Equipment" => Electrical Equipment 27 Battery, Connecting "Battery, Connecting".
Battery in luggage compartment
Perform the following work procedure:
- Raise the luggage compartment floor and secure it with the tool.
- Remove the right luggage compartment floor filler piece with the available tool.
The battery compartment cover is visible.
- Remove the ten bolts with multi-point socket heads - arrows - and remove the battery compartment cover - 1 -.
- Removed the molded part - arrow -.
- Move the battery negative wire - 2 - and positive wire - 1 - back and forth to see if the battery clamps are secure on the battery terminals.
CAUTION!
If battery positive (B+) connection is loose, disconnect ground (GND) cable first before attempting to remove or tighten plus connection, to prevent personal injury.
If the battery clamp on positive terminal is not seated securely:
- First disconnect the battery clamp - 2 - at the battery negative terminal.
- Tighten the battery positive terminal - 1 - to 6 Nm.
- Connect the battery clamp - 2 - to the battery negative terminal and tighten it to 6 Nm.
If ground connection on battery is not tight:
- Tighten the battery clamp - 2 - on the battery negative terminal to 6 Nm.
- Reinstall the molded part - arrow -.
- Install the battery compartment cover and tighten the ten multi-point socket head bolts.
(M6 x 16) to 10 Nm.
- Place the right luggage compartment floor filler piece in the correct location with the tool available and fold the floor covering back.
• Follow the steps after connecting the battery: "Electrical Equipment" => Electrical Equipment 27 Battery, Connecting "Battery, Connecting".
