Engine Control Module, with Anti-Theft Protection

Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required

Window cutter (VAG 1561A)

Blade, offset (VAG 1561/14)

Hot air gun from wiring harness repair kit (VAS 1978)

Attachment nozzle from wiring harness repair kit (VAS 1978)

Locking pliers

If it is desired to replace the Engine Control Module (ECM), connect the vehicle diagnosis, testing and information system (VAS 5051) and perform the function "Replace control module".

Removing

- Switch off the ignition.

- Remove the wiper arms and plenum chamber cover. Refer to

- Remove the plenum chamber bulkhead.

The threads of the shear bolts are equipped with locking compound. By heating the shear bolts using a hot air gun, inhibition effect of the locking compound is lowered.

CAUTION!
Cover wires, harness connectors and control modules in close vicinity to the ECM to prevent damage from burning.

Perform the adjustments on the hot air gun - 4 - as shown:

- Turn the potentiometer for the temperature adjustment - 2 - to maximum heat output (600 °C (1112 °F)).





- Move the two stage switch for air quantity - 3 - to position 3.

CAUTION!
By heating the shear bolts, parts of the protective housing are heated intensely. Wear protective gloves to prevent injuries.

- Guide the nozzle of hot air gun onto the shear bolt.

- Switch on the heat gun and heat the bolt for approximately 20 to 25 seconds.

- Remove the shear bolt using pliers on the bolt head.

The procedure for the second shear bolt is exactly the same.

If the bolts cannot be removed, cut into the head of the shear bolt so that two parallel surfaces are formed - arrows - and then remove them using a screwdriver.





- Insert a screwdriver - A - between the protective housing and retaining plate - arrow -.





- Pry the protective housing upward using the screwdriver - A - and pull it off sideways from the retaining plate - arrow -.





- Disengage the forward electrical connector - 1 - from the ECM and disconnect it.





- Pry up the locking mechanism - 2 - slightly.

- Slide the ECM out of the retainer - arrow -.

- Disengage the rear electrical connector from the ECM and disconnect it.

Installing

- Connect the rear electrical connector to the ECM and engage it.

- Slide the ECM into the retainer.

- Press the locking mechanism - 2 - against the ECM.





- Connect the front electrical connector - 1 - to the ECM and engage it.

- Slide the protective housing onto the retaining plate.

- Tighten the shear bolts - 1 - uniformly until the bolt heads shear off.
