Engine: Application and ID
Engine Number
• The engine number ("engine code" and "serial number") are located at the front of the engine/transmission joint.
• There is also a label located on the upper timing chain cover with the "engine code" and "serial number".
• The engine code letters are also located on the vehicle data label.
• The data label is located, in the customer service plan as well as on the vehicle in the spare tire wheel well or on the luggage compartment floor.
• The engine number consists of up to nine characters (alphanumeric).
• The first part (maximum 4 letters) represents the "engine code", the second (six digit) is the "serial number".
• If more than 999,999 engines with the same engine code are produced, the first of the six characters is replaced with a letter.
Vehicles with Four Digit Engine Code
• Four digit engine codes beginning with the letter "C" are used.
• The first three digits describe the mechanical structure of the engine and are still stamped on the engine, as before.
• The fourth digit describes the engine output and torque and depends on the Engine Control Module (ECM).
• The four digit engine code is on the type plate, the vehicle data label and on the ECM.
• Vehicles for some countries do not have a type plate. Installed locations for the vehicle data label and the type plate.
