Removing
Vehicles with the battery in the engine compartment
- Remove battery and battery tray.
Continuation for all vehicles
- Disconnect wire - 1 - from the E-box.
- Disconnect Ground (GND) wire - 2 -.
- Separate connector - 3 -.
- Guide wiring harness out of all the brackets on the longmember so it can be removed together with the steering gear.
- Remove mounting nuts - arrows - and remove foot well trim - 1 -.
- Remove bolt - 1 - and pull off universal joint - 2 - from steering gear.
- Remove front wheels.
- Remove lower noise insulation.
Vehicles with auxiliary heater
- Remove bolts - arrows A - from heat shield.
- Remove bolt - arrow B - and slide exhaust pipe of auxiliary heater - 1 - upward.
Continuation for all vehicles
- Disconnect connector for service interval extension to the oil pan.
- Remove bracket for exhaust system from subframe.
- Remove coupling rods from stabilizer.
- Remove nuts - arrows -.
- Loosen tie rod end nut, but do not remove yet.
To protect thread, screw nut on pin a few turns.
- Press off tie rod end from wheel bearing housing with ball joint puller 3287A and then remove nut.
- Remove pendulum support from transmission, remove bolts - 13 - to do so.
- Secure subframe with brackets.
- Place
Engine/Transmission Jack VAG 1383 A under subframe.
- Place a block of wood - 1 -, for example, between Engine/Transmission Jack VAG 1383 A and the subframe.
- Loosen bolts - 4 and 5 - and lower subframe with brackets slightly. Observe electrical wires, when doing so.
- Lower Engine/Transmission Jack VAG 1383 A and guide the steering gear wiring harness back.
- Secure subframe on Engine/Transmission Jack V.A.G. 1383 A with the accompanying strap.
Installing
Installation is in reverse sequence.
- Install battery tray and battery.
- Install noise insulation and tighten.

CAUTION! From model year 08, in the 02Q manual transmission, the pendulum support threaded connections are equipped with Heli-Coil(R) inserts.
Use strength class 10.9 bolts on these and all other transmissions.
If there are no Heli-Coil(R) inserts in the 02Q manual transmission, then use strength class 8.8 bolts and the appropriate tightening specifications.
