Transmission, Removing, 2.0L
Transmission, Removing, 2.0L
- Before beginning removal, print out a diagnostic protocol for this vehicle if possible. Affix the protocol on to transmission before sending back the removed transmission in the usual way.
Short description
Transmissions are removed downward as a unit. Engine remains in vehicle.
Battery housing, air filter and engine cover are removed from top. Engine with transmission are then supported so that the left subframe mount can be removed.
Noise insulation is removed and drive axles are pressed down from below. Transmission is then set down using transmission jack.
• Subframe is not removed.
Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required
• Engine/transmission jack (V.A.G 1383 A)
• Torque Wrench (V.A.G 1332)
• Transmission support (3282)
• Adjustment plate (3282 /36)
• Hose clamps up to 25 mm diameter. (3094)
• Socket and key (T10179)
• Socket (V/175)
• Socket and key (T10035)
• Engine support bridge (10 - 222 A)
• Adapter (10 - 222 A /13)
- If possible, print out a diagnostic protocol for this vehicle before removing. Affix protocol to removed transmission before sending it back in the usual way.
- Raise vehicle.
- Place selector lever in position "P".
- Remove engine cover air filter with intake hose.
- Remove battery
- Remove ATF cooler from battery housing, pull off and set aside.
- Remove battery housing.
- Disengage selector lever cable from transmission by hand - 1 - and pull out of bracket - 2 -.
Handle with care and make sure not to kink cable. Do not use pliers, otherwise retainer straps may break off.
- Pry cable off ball head - 2 -.
- Remove upper wire bracket from transmission.
- Remove lower wire bracket from transmission.
- Remove ATF lines from transmission.
- Disconnect electrical connections from transmission and starter.
• Multi-Function Transmission Range Switch
• Starter
• Ground (GND) cable to bracket
- Remove upper starter bolt.
- Remove upper connection bolts for engine/transmission.
Bolts can be installed using socket (T10179). When tightening however, observe the lowest tightening torque then => [ Selector Lever in Position and Ignition Switched On ] Testing and Inspection=> [ Selector Lever in Position and Ignition Switched On ] Testing and Inspection.
Socket (T10035) facilitates assembly.
- Put on engine support bridge (10 - 222 A) and support engine/transmission. Do not lift.
- Remove all six bolts for bracket - A -.
Bracket is removed later, once transmission has been lowered.
- Press brake in order to remove drive axle left bolt - arrow - (second technician).
• After that, do not set down vehicle on to floor.
- Remove noise insulation pan.
- If installed, remove heat shield over the right drive axle from engine.
- Disconnect both electrical connectors from transmission.
- Remove left lower part of wheel housing liner.
- Remove starter
- Remove pendulum support, first - A -, then - B -.
(When installing, tighten - B - first, then - A -.)
- Remove nuts - arrows - from both sides of lower control arms.
Tightening torques of control arm bolts.
- Press both drive axles out of transmission.
- Remove left drive axle.
- Place right shaft upward as far as possible and secure in this position.
Protective coating of shafts must not be damaged, thus cable ties made of plastic are very suitable.
- Now remove bracket of subframe mount. For this purpose, lower engine with transmission slightly via spindles of engine support bridge (10 - 222 A).
Six rotations are sufficient.
- If installed, remove bracket for exhaust system/transmission.
- Remove lower engine/transmission connecting bolts.
- Keep easily accessible bolt installed for safety reasons.
- Start with two lower bolts.
When removing converter nuts, the bore on the rear side of the engine is covered with a rubber cap.
- Remove this cap.
- Remove six converter nuts - arrow - using insertion tool (V/175).
• Carefully turn engine further!
• Especially when installing, make sure that engine is turned carefully while bringing transmission and engine together. Starter ring gear can be secured from outside using screwdriver. Thus, studs will fit into holes of drive plate when installing.
- Before now removing the last connection bolt, support transmission using Engine/Transmission Jack (V.A.G 1383 A), transmission support (3282) and adjustment plate (3282 /36).
- Only now remove the last bolt.
- Press transmission off engine.
• Observe torque converter. Torque converter must be removed together with transmission.
- When lowering, observe clearance of transmission to subframe. If necessary, perform slight, additional adjustment to transmission support (3282).
- Remember that, e.g. mounting bracket and bracket for selector lever cable must be modified when installing a new transmission.
