Draining and Filling
Draining and Filling
Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required
• Refractometer (T10007)
• Adapter (VAG 1274/8)
• Drip tray (VAG 1306) or drip tray for VAS 6100 (VAS 6208)
• Torque wrench (5-50 Nm) (VAG 1331)
• Spring type clip pliers (VAS 5024A)
• Cooling system charge unit (VAS 6096)
Draining
• Drained coolant must be stored in a clean container for disposal or reuse.
• Follow disposal regulations.
CAUTION!
Hot steam may escape when opening the expansion tank cap. Wear protective goggles and protective clothing to prevent damage to your eyes and from scalding. Cover the cap with a cloth and open very carefully.
- Carefully open the cap for the coolant expansion tank.
- Remove the noise insulation.
- Disengage the quick acting coupling - arrow - and disconnect the coolant hose from the bottom of the radiator.
• Observe disposal regulations for coolant!
Filling
CAUTION!
Only use tap water for mixing. Well water does not have the quality necessary to ensure proper coolant function.
• Only use coolant additive G 12 plus-plus conforming to "TL-VW 774 G".
• G 12, G 12 plus and G 12 plus-plus may be mixed together.
• G 12 plus-plus prevents frost and corrosion damage, scaling and also raises the boiling point. For this reason the system must be filled all year round with frost and corrosion protection additives.
• Because of its high boiling point, the coolant improves engine reliability under heavy loads, particularly in countries with tropical climates.
• Protection against frost must be assured to about -25 °C (-13 °F) (in arctic climatic countries to about -35 °C (-31 °F )).
• The coolant concentration must not be reduced by adding tap water even in warmer seasons and in warmer countries. The coolant additive portion must be at least 40%.
• If for climatic reasons greater frost protection is required, the amount of G 12 plus-plus can be increased, but only up to 60% (frost protection to about -40 °C (-40 °F)), otherwise frost protection and cooling effectiveness will be reduced.
• If the radiator, heater core, coolant pump or cylinder head gasket was replaced, completely replace the engine coolant.
• Refractometer (T10007) is recommended for determining freeze protection density.
Recommended Mixture Ratios
• 1 The quantity of coolant can vary depending upon the vehicle equipment.
Procedure
- Slide coolant hose at bottom on to cooler connection and secure.
- Install the (VAG 1274/8) onto the expansion tank.
- Fill coolant circuit using the (VAS 6096). Refer to => Operating instructions for cooling system filler unit VAS 6096.
CAUTION!
Hot steam may escape when opening the expansion tank cap. Wear protective goggles and protective clothing to prevent damage to your eyes and from scalding. Cover the cap with a cloth and open very carefully.
- Check the coolant level and top off if necessary. With the engine at operating temperature, the coolant level must be at the top marking, with the engine cold, it must be in the center of the hatched area.
- Install the noise insulation.
