Engine Control Module with Anti-Theft Immobilizer
Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required
• Window cutter (VAG 1561A)
• Saw set (VAG 1561/14)
• Hot air gun from wiring harness repair kit (VAS 1978 )
• If it is required to replace the Engine Control Module (ECM), connect the (VAS 5051B) and perform the guided function " Replace Engine Control Module (ECM)".
Removing
- Switch off the ignition.
- Remove the windshield wiper arms, plenum chamber cover and plenum chamber facing wall. Refer to
• The thread of the shear bolts are equipped with locking compound. By heating the shear bolts using a hot air gun, the inhibition effect of the locking compound is lowered.
CAUTION!
Cover wires, harness connectors and control modules in close vicinity of the Engine Control Module (ECM) to prevent damage from burning.
Perform the adjustments on the hot air gun - 4 - as shown:
- Turn the potentiometer for the temperature adjustment - 2 - to maximum heat output (600 °C (1112°F)).
- Move the two stage switch for air quantity - 3 - to position 3.
CAUTION!
By heating the shear bolts, parts of the protective housing are heated intensely. Wear protective gloves to prevent injuries.
- Guide the nozzle of the hot air gun onto the shear bolts.
- Switch the heat gun on and warm the bolts.
- Remove the bolts using locking pliers.
• If the bolts cannot be removed, cut into the heads of the bolts so that two parallel surfaces are formed - arrows - and then unscrew them.
- Insert a screwdriver - A - between the protective housing and retaining plate - arrow -.
- Pry the protective housing upward using the screwdriver - A - and pull it off sideways from the retaining plate - arrow -.
- Disengage the forward harness connector - 1 - from the ECM and disconnect it.
- Pry up the locking mechanism - 2 - slightly.
- Slide the ECM out of the retainer - arrow -.
- Disengage the rear harness connector from the ECM and disconnect it.
Installing
- Connect the rear harness connector to the ECM and engage it.
- Slide the ECM onto the retaining plate.
- Connect the front harness connector to the ECM and engage it.
- Slide the protective housing onto the retaining plate.
- Tighten the shear bolts - 1 - uniformly until the bolt heads shear off.
- Install the plenum chamber facing wall, plenum chamber cover and windshield wiper arms. Refer to
