Battery In Luggage Compartment

Battery in Luggage Compartment

CAUTION!
Vehicles with battery in luggage compartment is equipped with a battery isolator to increase crash safety. In the event of a collision, the airbag control module triggers a separation, which disrupts the power supply wiring to the starter and to the engine electronics. The battery cut-off takes place pyrotechnically through a very small explosive charge. To prevent accidentally triggering a separation when working on the battery or battery cut-off, you must first disconnect the battery. Refer to => [ Battery, Disconnecting and Connecting ] Battery, Disconnecting and Connecting.

Observe safety precautions when working on battery isolation system. Refer to => [ Battery Interrupt Igniter, Safety Precautions ] Service Precautions.

Observe notes for disposal of battery isolator units. Refer to => [ Battery Interrupt Igniter Disposal ] Battery Interrupt Igniter Disposal.

- Remove central gas venting system hose - 1 - from rubber grommet - 2 -.

- Fold handles - arrows - upward and take out battery.

Installing

CAUTION!
If battery is not secured properly, the following risks are possible:

Shortened battery service life due to vibration damage (explosion hazard).

Damage to battery plates.

Damage to battery casing caused by bracket (possible electrolyte leakage, high subsequent costs).

Reduced collision safety.

Install in reverse order of removal, noting the following:

- After installing, verify battery is properly seated.

- Reconnect battery. Refer to => [ Battery, Disconnecting and Connecting ] Battery, Disconnecting and Connecting.

- Place central venting hose - 1 - on battery and through rubber grommet - 2 - in bottom of battery housing.

CAUTION!
Central battery venting hose must not be kinked, closed and/or damaged. Battery acids pose health risks and are explosive. Carefully route the hose and ensure the battery can vent freely and not into inside of vehicle.

- Tighten all threaded connections to the specification. Refer to => [ Specifications ] Specifications.

CAUTION!
When disconnecting and connecting battery, the procedure must be followed as described in the repair information. Refer to => [ Battery, Disconnecting and Connecting ] Battery, Disconnecting and Connecting.
