HVAC Front Center Air Outlet Rattles (Canada Only)

Rattle noises from center air outlet may be heard in dash panel when driving.

Technical Background

Due to material thickness and tolerance differences of the center air outlet assembly, some vehicles may exhibit rattle noises from the dash panel, in the area of the center air outlet.

Production Solution

A5 Jetta

An improved center air outlet was introduced into production during calendar week (CW) 35/05, beginning with VIN 1K_6M663230.

Rabbit, GTI

Final production countermeasures pending.

Service

Install foam and flock tape insulators in specific locations on the central air outlet.

Insulate center air outlet as follows:

^ Remove center air outlet. See Repair Manual Heating & Air Conditioning Group 80, Heating, Ventilation.

Note:
Care must be taken when separating the Emergency Flasher (hazard) button electrical connector. Equal pressure must be provided on BOTH sides of the connector release. Failure to do so may result in a damaged switch.

^ Select a piece of flock tape, Part No. 847 201, from W-42 (squeak and rattle kit). See --> Required Parts and Tools.





^ Trim flock tape to size (95 mm x 6 mm) and apply along the back side of the center air outlet, on top of the ridges, -arrows- as shown. Apply to right and left side of center air outlet.

^ Turn center air outlet over.





^ Trim pieces of foam tape insulation, Part No. 1Y0 871 435, to size
(95 mm) and apply along the inside lip of the center air outlet, -
arrows- as shown. DO NOT cover center alignment holes.

^ Install center air outlet. See Repair Manual Heating & Air Conditioning Group 80, Heating, Ventilation.

Note:
Ensure proper installation of center air outlet and mounting hardware. Replace all missing or stripped nuts and screws. See --> Required Parts and Tools.
