Removing

- Before beginning removal, print out a diagnostic protocol for this vehicle if possible. Affix the protocol to the transmission before sending back the removed transmission in the usual way.

Short Description

The transmission is removed downward as a unit. Engine remains in vehicle.

Remove the battery housing, the air filter and the engine cover from the top. Engine with transmission are then supported so that the left transmission mount bracket can be removed.

Noise insulation is removed and drive axles are pressed down from below. Transmission is then set down using a transmission jack.

Subframe is not removed.

Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required

Engine and transmission jack (VAG 1383A)

Torque wrench (40-200 Nm) (VAG 1332)

Transmission support (3282)

Adjusting plate (3282/36)

Socket SW15 (V/175)

Wedge tool (T10161)

Engine support bridge (10-222A)

Engine support feet (10-222A/8)

Engine support adapter (10-222A/3)

Bracket with spindle and hook (10-222A/10)

Shackle (10-222A/12)

Adapter (10-222A/7)

Hose clip pliers (V.A.G 1921)

Removing

- Place the selector lever in the P position.

- Lift the vehicle, all 4 lift points of the hoist at the same height.

- Press the brake in order to remove the left drive axle bolt - arrow - (second technician).

After that, do not set the vehicle on the floor.

- Remove the engine cover air filter.

- Disconnect the hoses - arrows - and remove the intake hose from the throttle valve unit.

- Remove the battery and battery housing.

- Disconnect the selector lever cable - 1 - from the cable mounting bracket - 2 - and remove it.

Handle with care and make sure not to kink cable. Do not use pliers, otherwise retainer straps on the cable mounting bracket may break off.

- Pry off the cable - 1 - from the lever - 3 - using an open end wrench - 2 -.

- Disconnect the electrical connections from the transmission and starter.

Multi-function transmission range switch

Starter

Ground cable to bracket

- Remove the harness retainer - 1 - from the starter bolt - arrow -.

- Remove the upper starter bolt.

- Remove the upper bolts between the engine and the transmission.

So that engine and transmission can be supported:

- Disconnect the lines - 1 - from the transport strap - 3 -.

- Remove the transport strap - 3 - from the engine - 2 - and pull out of the eye - arrow -.

- Install a (10-222A/12) in this eye.

- Install the (10-222A).

- Extend the right (10-222A/10) with (10-222A /7).

The hook points downward and will be engaged on the cylinder block later.

- Remove the noise insulation.

- Remove the left lower part of the wheel housing liner.

- Remove the heat shield bolts - arrows - and shield from above the right drive axle.

- Remove the ball joint lower nuts - arrows - on both sides.

- Remove both drive axles from the transmission.

- Remove the left drive axle.

- Place the right drive axle upward as far as possible and secure it in this position.

- Disconnect the electrical connectors - 1 and 2 - from the transmission.

- Pull out connector under starter - 1 - and disconnect.

- Remove the bracket from the lower starter bolt.

- Remove the lower starter bolt and remove starter.

- Remove the pendulum support, first remove bolt - A -, then bolts - B -.

- Drain the cooling system.

- Rotate the cover cap - 1 - in the - direction of the arrow - and remove.

- Remove the six torque converter nuts using (V/175).

Carefully rotate the engine further!

- Engage the (10-222A/7) on the cylinder block.

- Remove the coolant hoses from the Automatic Transmission Fluid (ATF) cooler.

Tension the right spindle one turn (no more turns are necessary).

- Support the engine and transmission with the left spindle. Do not lift.

- Remove the transmission mount bracket - A -.

- Now remove the bracket for the transmission mount. To do this, slightly lower the engine with transmission via the left spindle on (10-222A).

Six rotations are sufficient.

- Remove the lower bolts between the engine and the transmission.

- Keep an easily accessible bolt installed for safety reasons.

- Before removing the last bolt, support the transmission using (VAG 1383A), (3282) and (3282/36).

- Now remove the last bolt.

- Press the transmission off the engine.

Observe the torque converter. Torque converter must be removed together with transmission.

- The cable mounting bracket and the selector lever cable bracket must be replaced when installing a new transmission.

Installing

- Make sure the alignment pins are pressed into the engine flange.

- See how the plate fits between the engine and transmission. The plate must touch the engine along the entire perimeter when pressing lightly against the engine using both hands. If it stands off above the engine, then it is not hooked into the cylinder block correctly.

Further installation is performed in the reverse sequence.

Engine and transmission should be engaged without tension in the mount.

- Replace all left transmission mount bolts.

- Install all new bolts by hand.

When installing, bolt the transmission mount bracket to the transmission first, tighten to 40 Nm + 90 degrees .

When tightening both bracket bolts to the vehicle, the old seat of the bolts can be adjusted between both bolts using a screwdriver. These two larger bolts are tightened to 60 Nm + 90 degrees .

Tightening specifications, transmission to engine. Refer to => [ Transmission to Engine Tightening Specifications ] Transmission to Engine Tightening Specifications.

- Adjust the selector lever cable. Refer to => [ Selector Lever Cable Adjusting, through 02.2009 ] Adjustments.

- Check the Automatic Transmission Fluid (ATF) level after installing. Refer to => [ ATF Level, Checking and Filling ] Testing and Inspection.

- Perform basic setting, to do so:

- Connect the (VAS 5051) and then select "perform basic setting" using the Guided Functions.
