Air Filter Element, 1.4L, Removing and Installing
• There are two different types of air filters:
• Air filter 1: air filter housing integrated in engine cover
• Air filter 2: separate air filter housing on engine
Air filter 1
- Remove engine cover.
- Remove screws - arrows -.
- Remove lower section of air filter housing - 1 - and remove air filter element - 2 -.
• Observe waste disposal regulations!
- Clean lower section of air filter housing.
- Insert new filter element - 1 - into lower section of air filter housing - 2 -.
• Self-locking bolts are equipped for fastening the upper part of the air filter housing to the lower part of air filter housing as well as the intake supports. If these bolts are loosened of tightened with a drill motor, the threads in the upper part of air filter housing can be damaged.
• For this reason, a drill motor may only be used when the following prerequisites are met:
• Drill motor speed must not exceed 200 RPM.
• The torque must be adjustable to max. 3 Nm.
- Tighten bolts - arrows - to maximum 3 Nm.
Air filter 2
Perform the following work procedure:
- Carefully remove hose - 1 -.
- Loosen bolts for upper part of air filter - 2 - and fold it upward to remove air filter - 3 -.
• Observe waste disposal regulations!
- Clean air filter housing.
- The installation of the air filter and housing is done in reverse order.
Air Filter Element, 1.6L, Removing and Installing
Removing
- Remove engine cover.
- Remove screws - arrows -.
- Remove lower section of air filter housing - 1 - and remove air filter element - 2 -.
• Observe waste disposal regulations!
- Clean lower section of air filter housing.
Installing
- Insert new filter element - 3 - into lower section of air filter housing - 2 -.
3 Nm.
- Place lower section of air filter housing on upper section of air filter housing.
- Tighten bolts - arrows - to maximum 3 Nm.
Air Filter Element, 2.0L FSI, 1.4L TFSI and FlexFuel, Removing and Installing
- Remove the 4 bolts - arrows - and remove the cover.
- Unscrew bracket - 2 -.
- Remove old filter element - 3 -.
• Observe waste disposal regulations!
- Clean filter housing and install new air filter element.
Tightening specifications:
• 2.0L FSI: Tighten bolt - 1 - of bracket to 2 Nm and bolts of cover to 3 Nm.
• 1.4L TFSI: Tighten the bracket bolt - 1 - to 2 Nm and the cover bolt to 8 Nm.
Air Filter Element, 2.0L TFSI, Removing and Installing
Removing
- Remove engine cover.
- Place engine cover with upper side on a soft surface, prevent damage to chrome applications.
- Unscrew bolts - arrows - on lower side of engine cover.
- Separate lower part of air filter housing - 1 - from upper part - 3 -.
- Remove air filter insert - 2 - from lower part of air filter housing - 1 -.
Installing
• Self-locking bolts are equipped for fastening the upper part of the air filter housing to the lower part of air filter housing as well as the intake supports. If these bolts are loosened of tightened with a drill motor, the threads in the upper part of air filter housing can be damaged.
• For this reason, a drill motor may only be used when the following prerequisites are met:
• Drill motor speed must not exceed 200 RPM.
• The torque must be adjustable to max. 3 Nm.
• Replace the engine cover rubber buffer on the Golf GTI "Edition 30" and the Golf GTI "Pirelli".
- Engage upper part of air filter housing - 1 - on retaining tabs - arrows - on upper part of air filter housing - 2 - and pivot in direction of arrow, then lightly press on.
- Both housing halves must fit together flush, - arrows -.
- Tighten bolts - arrows - to maximum 3 Nm.
Air Filter Element, 2.5L Gasoline Injection, Removing and Installing
Removing
- Remove engine cover.
- Place the top of the engine cover onto a soft surface, to prevent damage to housing.
- Unscrew bolts - arrows - on lower side of engine cover.
- Flip up and remove lower part of air filter housing - 1 - in direction of arrow.
- Remove air filter element - 1 - from lower part of air filter housing - 2 -.
- Blow out air filter housing with compressed air if necessary
Installing
- Insert air filter element - 1 - into lower part of air filter housing - 2 -.
• Make sure sealing surfaces on air filter housing are correctly positioned.
• Self-locking bolts are equipped for fastening the upper part of the air filter housing to the lower part of air filter housing as well as the intake supports. If these bolts are loosened of tightened using a drill motor, the threads in the upper part of air filter housing can be damaged.
• For this reason, a drill motor may only be used when the following prerequisites are met:
• The drill motor RPM is max. 200 / min.
• The torque must be adjustable to max. 2 Nm.
- Hook lower part of air filter housing - 1 - onto retaining tabs - arrows - of upper part of air filter housing - 2 -, pivot in direction of arrow, and then lightly press on.
Check the fit of housing halves - 1 - and - 2 - (rear part):
- Both housing halves must fit together flush, - arrows -.
Check the fit of housing halves - 1 - and - 2 - (front part):
- Both housing halves must fit together flush, - arrows -.
- Tighten bolts - arrows - to maximum 2 Nm.
• Tighten the bolts alternately and uniformly to prevent both housing halves from distorting.
- Install engine cover.
