Timing Components: Service and Repair
Engine Timing Module
Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required
• Engine and transmission holder (VAS 6095)
• Guide Pin (T10200)
• Assembly Tool (T10208)
• Torque Wrench (40-200 Nm) (V.A.G 1332)
Requirements:
• Engine and transmission removed.
• Engine is secured to the engine and transmission holder (VAS 6095). Refer to => [ Engine, Securing to the ] Engine, Securing to the Engine and Transmission Holder (VAS 6095).
Removing
- Drain the engine oil. Refer to Maintenance Procedures Rep. Gr. 03 Maintenance Procedures.
- Set the crankshaft to Top Dead Center (TDC) for cylinder 1. Refer to => [ Valve Timing, Checking ] Adjustments.
- Remove the cylinder heads. Refer to => [ Cylinder Head ] Cylinder Head.
- Separate the transmission from the engine. Refer to "Transmission.
- Remove all required hoses, wires and pipes from the engine management side.
- Remove the lower and upper oil pans. Refer to => [ Oil Pan Overview ] Description and Operation.
- Loosen the bolts for the engine timing module.
Make sure that the input shafts for the oil and coolant pumps do not fall off the cylinder block.
- Carefully pull the engine timing module off the inclined splines.
Installing
- Install the guide pins (T10200) into the threaded holes of the upper bearing bracket as shown.
- Install the engine timing module on the guide pins.
• Observe the following adjustment marks and requirements and note the inclined splines while doing so (wheels turn slightly when sliding on the module):
- The holes on the splines of the crankshaft gear and input gear for the oil pump must align as shown.
- The input shaft fits only in one position. Rotate the shaft so that the wide cutout in the hole aligns to the broad tooth on the pin.
- The hole on the drive wheel of cylinder bank 1 must align with the cast tab on the inside of the engine timing module as shown.
- Carefully slide the engine timing module on the guide pins until seated, note the mentioned adjustment marks while doing so.
- Center the engine timing module by placing the pressure piece (T10208/3) from the assembly tool (T10208/3) on the generator shaft end - A -. The pressure piece must be able to be set into the countersink without force.
- Replace the guide pins (T10200) s with bolts and tighten the bolts to 60 Nm.
- Now, tighten the bolts to 150 Nm + 90° (1/4) additional turn.
