Timing Cover: Description and Operation
Timing Case Overview
• Secure the engine to the engine and transmission holder (VAS 6095) when working on it.
1 Engine Timing Module
• Removing and installing, refer to => [ Engine Timing Module ] Service and Repair.
2 Control Housing
• install using silicone adhesive sealant (D 176 501 A1). Refer to => [ Sealant Bead for the Control Housing ].
3 Bolt
• 20 Nm
• Observe the tightening sequence, refer to => [ Control Housing Bolt Tightening Sequence and Specification ].
4 Bolt
• 20 Nm
5 Seal
• Do not additionally lubricate or grease the sealing lip of the seal.
• Before installing, remove any remaining oil from the crankshaft journal with a clean cloth.
• Removing and installing, refer to => [ Crankshaft Seal, Engine Timing Side, Replacing ] Crankshaft Seal, Engine Timing Side, Replacing.
6 Drive Plate
• Removing and installing, refer to => [ Drive Plate ] Service and Repair.
7 Bolt
• 50 Nm + 90° (1/4) additional turn.
• Always replace
8 Washer
9 Bolt
• 13 Nm
Sealant Bead for the Control Housing
- Apply the sealant bead onto the clean sealing surface of the control housing as shown.
Control Housing Bolt Tightening Sequence and Specification
- Tighten the bolts - 1 through 18 - in the sequence shown to 20 Nm.
