55 10 02September 17, 2010
2018695 Supersedes T.B. group 55, number 08-05 dated Sept. 26, 2008 to update warranty table.
Vehicle Information
Condition
Rear Lid Only Opens Approximately One-Third, Electrically Operated Rear Lid, U.S. Only
Technical Background
There are three possible causes:
^ Switch for closing rear lid is actuated when rear lid is closed (because either switch or inside trim has been incorrectly fitted), thus automatically programming an opening height of 31".
^ Opening angle has been accidentally programmed to 31".
^ Opening angle has been programmed to 31" as a result of a restricting item such as clothing getting accidentally caught near switch.
Production Solution
Control unit 7L6 959 107 B, Software 1310.
^ From Chassis No: 7L_8D075627
Improved installation of the rear lid
Service
Procedure:
If Part No. 7L6959107 or 7L6959107A is shown in the diagnosis protocol, update control unit using SVM in Guided Fault Finding according to the table.
Vehicle requirements:
Note:
Battery MUST have a minimum no-load charge of 12.5 volts. (Failure to maintain voltage during update process may result in control module failure.)
Use INC-940 battery charger to maintain voltage during the procedure.
Workshops which have a networked VAS diagnostic tester can run an online update of control unit using SVM (software version management).
Tip:
SVM process must be completed in it's entirety so the database receives an update confirmation response. A warranty may not be reimbursed if there is no confirmation response to support claim. For further update instructions and troubleshooting, refer to SVM Technical Bulletin 2014603 in ElsaWeb.
Procedure for updating is in the Guided Fault Finding/ Function Component Selection/Software Version Management, Adapt Software.
The SVM unit code is supplied in chart.
Tip:
Information concerning Error-ERP0220E Unbekannter AM Code
If the following error occurs check that the proper SVM unit code is being entered correctly.
After Update is Complete:
^ Check Software version of rear lid control module using Vehicle Self Diagnosis.
^ Set Basic Settings in either Guided Functions of GFF.
Reprogram Opening Angle:
^ Open rear lid
^ Check whether event "implausible signal from rear lid switch" is logged in event memory.
If complaint is static:
^ Run a systematic electrical complaint check.
If complaint is sporadic or not logged:
^ Switch may be tripped as a result of breaker enclosure twisting, even if switch is not depressed.
^ Ensure switch for closing rear lid is seated correctly in the panel, and correct as necessary.
^ Ensure panel is positioned correctly without any tension. If panel twists when rear lid is closed, this may trip the switch. As necessary, correct position of panel.
^ Ensure switch is working by activating it. If switch trips too easily, check whether it works when removed. Ensure rear lid does not close, if necessary stop it from moving using remote control or pushbutton handle.
^ If necessary, replace switch.
^ If no mechanical failure is identified, discuss with customer the following scenario's:
^ When opening rear lid, did user accidentally pressed switch for longer than 4 seconds, preventing the rear lid from moving.
^ When rear lid was closing, did an object such as an item of clothing become caught under the switch. Finally, reprogram opening angle together with customer.
To do this:
^ Open rear lid manually to required height and then press close button until indicators confirm that required height position is reset.

Additional Information
Please discuss the following with customer:
^ Low opening height may be accidentally programmed due to items of clothing getting caught around the switch when closing the rear lid
^ Incorrect position can easily be rectified by manual adjustment to required height and then saving this new position. It does not require a visit to dealership
^ Switch for stopping movement should only be applied momentarily, as an incorrect position may be stored in memory.
