Rear Lid Trim
Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required
• Adhesive strip remover (VAS 6349)
• Pull handle (V.A.G 1351/1)
• Cartridge gun (V.A.G 1628)
Removing
• It is not possible to remove the trim on the rear lid without destroying it.
Before beginning the work, clean and seal off all surrounding part.
Do not use cutting cord to remove the trim because it may damage painted surfaces.
Wear protective gloves and eye wear when removing the trim.
Perform the following steps:
- Thread the cutting cord (357 853 999 A) - 6 - in between the rear lid - 2 - and the trim - 1 -.
- Cut through the adhesive bead - 5 - and tape - 4 - by moving both pull handles (V.A.G 1351/1) - 7 - in "sawing motions".
- The centering pins - 3 - are also cut through.
Installation
• Make sure the adhesive surfaces are free of dust and grease.
• Install the trim immediately after cleaning.
• Remove protective film just prior to assembly. The processing temperature is approximately 70°F (21°C).
New Rear Lid, Preparing for Bonding
- Clean the adhesive surface with adhesive remover right before bonding the attachments.
• The bonding surfaces must be free of dust and grease and there must be no left-over adhesive on them.
Prepare Rear Lid for Bonding
- Remove any adhesive residue left by the double-sided tape using adhesive remover (VAS 6349).
- The adhesive band is cut down to approximately 1 mm without damaging the paint.
- It is not necessary to clean the cutting surface.
• Residual material acts as a base for the new adhesive sealing material.
- Clean the adhesive surface where the double-sided tape will be applied using adhesive remover right before bonding the attachments.
• The bonding surfaces must be free of dust and grease and there must be no left-over adhesive on them.
- Apply the glass/paint primer (D 009 200 02) evenly to the marked surfaces in one stroke using the applicator (D 009 500 25).
- Apply an adhesive bead - 5 - with a 4 mm diameter to the marked surface as illustrated.
- The 1K MS assembly adhesive (D 172 090 A2) is applied with the cartridge gun (V.A.G 1628).
- Remove the protective film from the adhesive tape - 4 -.
- Position the trim with the centering pins - 3 - in the holes on the rear lid.
- Press evenly and forcefully onto the trim where the adhesive tape is located.
- The trim is secured to the rear lid with 4 strips of tape.
Minimum curing time for newly bonded components is 4 hours.
Minimum curing time is the time from applying the components up to vehicle use.
During the time, the vehicle must be standing on an even surface and the temperature in the room must be 18°C.
The vehicle is operationally ready only after the minimum curing time has elapsed.
