Cooling System: Description and Operation

Cooling System

When doing any repair work, especially in the engine compartment, pay attention to the following due to clearance issues:

Route all lines and wires in their original locations.

Ensure sufficient clearance to all moving or hot components.

Hot steam may escape when opening the expansion tank cap. Wear protective goggles and protective clothing to prevent damage to eyes and scalding. Cover the cap with a cloth and open very carefully.

When the engine is warm the cooling system is under pressure. If necessary release the pressure before beginning the repair work.

Hoses are secured with spring type clips. In cases of repair only use spring type clips.

Hose clip pliers (VAS 6340) or (VAS 6362) are recommended for installing spring clamps.

While installing, route the coolant hoses free of tension and without them coming into contact with other components.

The arrows on coolant pipes and coolant hoses must line up across from each other.

Always replace gaskets and seals.

Perform a leakage test on the cooling system using the cooling system tester (V.A.G 1274) and adapters (V.A.G 1274/8) and (V.A.G 1274/9).
