Rear Lid Tail Lamps

Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required

Torque Wrench (V.A.G 1783)

Removing and installing the bulb holder

Removing and installing the back-up lamp bulb

Checking the rear lid tail lamps

Removing and installing the fog lamp bulb

Illustrations depict removal and installation of the left side. Removal and installation of the right side is performed symmetrically.

Removing

- Switch off the ignition and all electrical consumers and move the ignition key or start button into the 0 position (preliminary engaged position).

- Unclip the service cover - 1 - from the trim - 2 -.






- Release the electrical connector - 3 - by pulling the locking tab - 2 - in the - direction of the arrow - and remove it from the tail lamp.






- Remove the three nuts - 1 - and the three tensioning brackets behind them.

- Remove the tail lamp back out of the rear lid.

Installing

Install in reverse order of removal. Note the following:

- Position the tensioning brackets - 1 - on the tail lamp threaded pins as illustrated.






- Install the three nuts - 2 - but only tighten them 1-2 turns.

- Insert the tail lamp in the rear lid and tighten the nuts - 1 - to the specification shown in => [ Rear Lid Tail Lamps Overview ] Rear Lid Tail Lamps Overview.






- Connect the connector - 3 - and make sure it engages.

The connector - 3 - must engage "audibly" when installing.

Connector is locked correctly when locking button - 2 - is engaged.

- Check the gap dimension to the body after installing the tail lamp assembly.

Removing and installing the bulb holder:

Removing

- Switch off the ignition and all electrical consumers and move the ignition key or start button into the 0 position (preliminary engaged position).

During removal and installation, leave ignition key with remote control inside the vehicle to prevent the doors from locking and possibly activating the "Coming Home / Leaving Home" functions on its own.

Illustrations depict removal and installation of the left side. Removal and installation of the right side is performed symmetrically.

- Remove the tail lamp in the rear lid.

- Press the locking button - 2 - in the - direction of the arrow - and carefully remove the bulb carrier - 1 - from the tail lamp.






Installing

Install in reverse order of removal. Note the following:






The connector - 3 - must engage "audibly" when installing.

Connector is locked correctly when locking button - 2 - is engaged.

Removing and installing the back-up lamp bulb:

Removing:

- Switch off the ignition and all electrical consumers and move the ignition key or start button into the 0 position (preliminary engaged position).

Illustrations depict removal and installation of the left side. Removal and installation of the right side is performed symmetrically.

- Remove the tail lamp bulb carrier in the rear lid.

- Press the left back-up lamp (M16) or right back-up lamp (M17) - 2 - into the socket slightly, rotate it in the - direction of the arrow - and remove it from the bulb carrier - 4 -.






Left back-up lamp: 12 V, H6W

Installing

Install in reverse order of removal. Note the following:






The connector - 3 - must engage "audibly" when installing.

Connector is locked correctly when locking button - 2 - is engaged.

Removing and installing the tail lamp bulb:

Removing

- Switch off the ignition and all electrical consumers and move the ignition key or start button into the 0 position (preliminary engaged position).

During removal and installation, leave ignition key with remote control inside the vehicle to prevent the doors from locking and possibly activating the "Coming Home / Leaving Home" functions on its own.

- Remove the tail lamp bulb carrier in the rear lid.

- Pull the left tail lamp bulb 2 (M49) or right tail lamp bulb 2 (M50) - 1 - straight up out of the bulb carrier - 4 -.






Tail lamp bulb: 12 V, W16W

Installing

Install in reverse order of removal. Note the following:






The connector - 3 - must engage "audibly" when installing.

Connector is locked correctly when locking button - 2 - is engaged.

Removing and installing the fog lamp bulb:

Removing

- Switch off the ignition and all electrical consumers and move the ignition key or start button into the 0 position (preliminary engaged position).

- Remove the tail lamp bulb carrier in the rear lid.

- Pull the left fog lamp bulb (L46) or right fog lamp bulb (L47) - 3 - straight up out of the bulb carrier - 4 -.






Rear fog lamp bulb: 12 V, W21W

Installing

Install in reverse order of removal. Note the following:






The connector - 3 - must engage "audibly" when installing.

Connector is locked correctly when locking button - 2 - is engaged.

Checking the rear lid tail lamp:

Tail lamp in rear lid ( Left Rear Fog Lamp (L46) and Right Back-Up Lamp (M17) ) can be checked via output Diagnostic Test Mode (DTM) of Vehicle Electrical System Control Module (J519) => [ Output Diagnostic Test Mode ] Output Diagnostic Test Mode.
