Side Panel Tail Lamps

Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required

Torque Wrench (V.A.G 1783)

Removing and installing the bulb holder

Checking the tail lamps

Removing

Illustrations depict removal and installation of the left side. Removal and installation of the right side is performed symmetrically.

- Switch off the ignition and all electrical consumers and move the ignition key or start button into the 0 position (preliminary engaged position).

During removal and installation, leave ignition key with remote control inside the vehicle to prevent the doors from locking and possibly activating the "Coming Home / Leaving Home" functions on its own.

- Remove the service cover - 1 - from the side trim panel - 2 - in the direction of the arrow.






- Release the electrical connector - 1 - by pulling the locking tab - 2 - in the - direction of the arrow - and remove it from the tail lamp.






- Remove the nuts - 3 - and the tail lamp back out of the side panel.

Installing

Install in reverse order of removal. Note the following:

When inserting the tail lamp in the body opening, make sure the Y-piece - 2 - is inserted in the tail lamp groove in the side panel - 1 -.






- Tighten the nuts - 3 - to the specification shown in => [ Side Panel Tail Lamps Overview ] Side Panel Tail Lamps Overview.






The connector - 2 - must engage "audibly" when installing.

Connector is locked correctly when locking button - 1 - is engaged.

- Check the gap dimension to the body after installing the tail lamp assembly.

Removing and installing the bulb holder:

Removing

Illustrations depict removal and installation of the left side. Removal and installation of the right side is performed symmetrically.

- Switch off the ignition and all electrical consumers and move the ignition key or start button into the 0 position (preliminary engaged position).

During removal and installation, leave ignition key with remote control inside the vehicle to prevent the doors from locking and possibly activating the "Coming Home / Leaving Home" functions on its own.

- Remove the service cover - 1 - from the side trim panel - 2 - in the direction of the arrow.






- Press the locking button - 1 - inward in the - direction of the arrow - and carefully remove the bulb carrier - 2 - back out of the tail lamp.






- Release the electrical connector - 1 - by pulling the locking tab - 2 - in the - direction of the arrow - and remove it from the bulb carrier - 3 -.






Installing

Install in reverse order of removal. Note the following:






The connector - 2 - must engage "audibly" when installing.

Connector is locked correctly when locking button - 1 - is engaged.

Checking the tail lamp:

Left Tail lamp (M4) , Right Tail lamp (M2) , Left Brake Lamp (M9) , Right Brake Lamp (M10) , Left Rear Turn Signal Lamp (M6) , Right Rear Turn Signal Lamp (M8) function can be checked using Vehicle Electrical System Control Module (J519) On Board Diagnostic (OBD) program function "Output Diagnostic Test Mode (DTM)".
