Transmission, Removing
Short Description
- Prior to the removal, print out a diagnostic protocol. Return the removed transmission with the protocol.
The transmission is remove downward by itself. The engine remains in the vehicle.
Remove the air filter housing from the top. The engine and transmission are supported and it is possible to remove the transmission mount bracket.
Remove the noise insulation and transmission fluid ATF pipes from underneath. This detaches the drive axles and the transmission jack can lower the transmission.
• The subframe is not removed.
Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required
• Engine Support Bridge (10-222 A)
• Bracket for Engine (10-222 A/1)
• Adapter (10-222 A/18)
• Adjusting Plate (3282/56)
• Bracket (T10013)
• Insert Tool 18 mm (T10179)
• Transmission Support (3282)
• Hose Clamps up to 25 mm Dia. (3094) (Qty: 4)
• Tensioning Strap (T10038)
• Wedge Tool (T10161)
• Engine-/Gearbox Jack (V.A.G 1383 A)
• Engine Bung Set (VAS 6122)
• Socket SW15 (V/175)
• Drip Tray for VAS 6100 (VAS 6208)
- Press the brake pedal and remove the left drive axle bolt - arrow -. A second technician will be needed.
• Do not let the vehicle rest on the floor.
- Lift the vehicle.
- Move the selector lever into the "P" position.
- Turn off the ignition and disconnect the ground cable from the battery.
- Remove the air filter housing.
- Remove the air filter housing bracket bolts - arrows - and bracket.
- Disconnect the selector lever cable from the transmission - 1 - and pull it out of the bracket - 2 -.
Be careful not to bend the cable. Do not use pliers, otherwise the tabs on the cable bracket may break off.
- Pry the cable off the ball head - 2 -.
- Remove the cable from the bracket on the transmission.
- Disconnect the connectors from the transmission and starter.

• Ground cable to the bracket
- Remove the coolant lines - 1 and 2 - from the engine.
- Install the engine support bridge (10-222 A).
- Attach it to the engine and transmission. Do not lift.
- Remove the transmission mount to transmission mount bracket bolts - 1 -.
Steam may escape when opening the expansion tank. Wear protective eye wear and clothing protection to prevent eye injury and scalding. Cover the cap on the expansion tank with a cloth and open it carefully.
- Open the cap on the coolant expansion tank.
- Clamp off the coolant hoses to the transmission fluid cooler using hose clamps up to 25 mm dia. (3094) and remove the hoses form the cooler.
- Remove both upper engine to transmission bolts.
- Remove the nut - 3 - from the stud bolt at the top of the starter.
- Remove the noise insulation.
- Remove the nut - 2 - and the wire holder - 1 -.
- Remove the right drive axle heat shield from the engine
- Disconnect the both connectors from the transmission.
- Remove the lower section of the left wheel housing liner.
- Remove the pendulum support, first bolt - A -, and then bolts - B -.
(When installing again, first tighten bolts - B -, and then bolt - A -) Tightening specification.
- Remove the ball joint to lower control arm nuts - arrows - on both lower control arms.
Ball joint to lower control arm nut tightening specification.
- Remove both drive axles from the transmission.
- Remove the left drive axle from the vehicle
- Secure the right drive axle up as high as possible to the strut.
- Remove the lower engine to transmission bolts.
- Leave one easily accessible bolt for safety.
- Start with both lower bolts.
- Remove the six torque converter nuts - arrows - using the socket SW 15 (V/175). Counter hold the starter ring gear with a screwdriver.
- Clamp off the transmission fluid pipe - 2 - hoses using hose clamps up to 25 mm dia. (3094).
- Remove the bolt - 1 - and then pull the pipes - 2 - off the transmission.
- Seal off the pipes and transmission with clean plugs.
- Align the transmission support (3282) with the adjusting plate (3282/56).
- Support the transmission using engine-/gearbox jack (V.A.G 1383 A) and transmission support (3282) , do not raise.
- Remove the last bolt.
- Separate the transmission from the engine.
• Pay attention to the torque converter. It must be removed together with the transmission.
- The following fasteners must be replaced when installing a new transmission.
