Generator
Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required
• Torque Wrench (V.A.G 1331)
• Locking Pin (T10060 A)
Follow the procedure in the repair information when disconnecting and connecting the battery. Refer to => [ Battery, Disconnecting and Connecting ] Removal and Replacement.
Removing
- Disconnect the battery. Refer to => [ Battery, Disconnecting and Connecting ] Removal and Replacement.
- Remove the noise insulation.
- Remove the right front section of the wheel housing liner..
Mark the top of the ribbed belt and the running direction before removing it. Make sure the belt is installed correctly and pay attention to the running direction. The belt will fail if it installed opposite the running direction or if is installed incorrectly.
- Mark running direction of ribbed belt.
- Release tension on ribbed belt by swinging tensioning element using a 16 mm open-end wrench in direction of - arrow -.
- Secure tensioning element - 2 - using (T10060 A) - 1 -.
- Remove ribbed belt.
Remove the A/C compressor and tie it to the vehicle with a suitable wire.
- Remove the wiring bracket nut - arrow -.
- Release and disconnect the terminal 61 connector - 2 -.
- Remove the cap - 1 -.
- Open clip on plug - 3 - and disengage wire from plug.
- Remove the nut - 1 - on the B+ wire - 2 - from the generator and lay the B+ wire aside.
- Remove the nut - 1 - on the tensioner - 2 - and remove the tensioner.
- Remove generator screws - arrows -.
- Remove generator downward from vehicle.
Installing
Install in reverse order of removal. Note the following:
• When installing an already used ribbed belt, note direction of travel marked when it was removed!
• Before installing the ribbed belt, make sure all components (generator, A/C compressor) are securely fastened.
• When installing the ribbed belt, make sure it is properly seated in the belt pulley!
- Drive threaded sleeves - A - out of generator housing approximately 4 mm in - direction of arrow -.
- Screw wire retainer - arrow - firmly to rear side of generator in 9 o'clock position.
- Tighten all threaded connections to the specification shown in => [ Generator Overview ] Generator Overview.
Observe notes for threaded connections of battery terminals.
- Connect the battery. Refer to => [ Battery, Disconnecting and Connecting ] Removal and Replacement.
- Start the engine and verify that the belt is running properly.
- Turn off the engine.
