Trailing Arm with Bracket

Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required

Torque Wrench (40-200 Nm) (V.A.G 1332)

Wheel Hub Support (T10149)

Removing

- Remove the wheel.

- Remove the coil spring. Refer to => [ Coil Spring ] Coil Spring.

- Remove the retainer - 1 -, by pressing out the inner pins - arrows A -.

- Remove the coupling rod - 2 - from the trailing arm.

- Remove the trailing arm bolts - arrows B -.

- Unclip the electrical wire from the trailing arm bracket.

- Mark the installed position of the bracket to the body.

- Remove the trailing arm bracket bolts - arrows -.

- Remove the trailing arm - 1 - with the bracket.

If the trailing arm is being replaced, the bracket must be removed from the arm.

- To do so, clamp the trailing arm in a vise so that the bracket - 1 - makes contact with the vise - arrow -.

- Remove the bolt - 2 -.

Installed position of the bracket to the trailing arm must then be adjusted.

Determining the Installed Position of the Bracket Relative to the Trailing Arm

Measure dimension - a - from the center of the bolt to the outer edge of the bracket.

Dimension - a -: 57.5 +/- 1 mm.

1. Bracket

2. Trailing arm

- When dimension - a - has been adjusted, tighten the bolt.

Installing

Note the different tie rod versions when replacing the trailing arm. Refer to => [ Tie Rod Characteristics ] Procedures.

Note the allocation of the tie rods for the trailing arms. Refer to => [ Allocation of the Tie Rods for the Trailing Arms ] Procedures.

The threaded connection of the trailing arm/wheel bearing housing must only be tightened when all other components of the respective wheel suspension have been already assembled. To tighten, the suspension must be unloaded. Only now do the trailing arm and wheel bearing housing move into the position required - arrows -.

Position: Threaded Connection of the Trailing Arm/Wheel Bearing Housing

Always perform the following work in the sequence given!

- Install the trailing arm (and bracket) bolts - arrows - to the wheel bearing housing, but do not tighten.

- Insert the coupling rod - 1 - into the trailing arm/wheel bearing housing, do not tighten the nut yet.

- Raise the wheel suspension using the engine-/gearbox jack (V.A.G 1383 A) and the wheel hub support (T10149) until the bracket makes contact with the body.

- Install and tighten the trailing arm bracket bolts - arrows - to the marks.

- Lower down the wheel suspension using the engine-/gearbox jack (V.A.G 1383 A) and remove the wheel hub support (T10149) from the wheel hub.

- Install the coil spring. Refer to => [ Coil Spring ] Coil Spring.

- Tighten the trailing arm bolts - arrows B - to specification, observe the required position of the components while doing so. Refer to => [ Position: Threaded Connection of the Trailing Arm/Wheel Bearing Housing ] Removal and Replacement.

- Tighten the coupling rod nut - 2 - to specification.

- Install the retainer - 1 -, by pressing in the inner pins - arrows A -.

- When installing the wire for the electrical parking brake, make sure the dimension - a - between the connector - 1 - and the retainer - 2 - is exact.

Dimension - a - = 150 mm

- Install the wheel and tighten the wheel bolts. Refer to => [ Wheel Bolt Tightening Specifications ] Wheel Bolt Tightening Specifications.

- Perform a vehicle alignment. Refer to => [ Vehicle Alignment ] Vehicle Alignment.
