Compression Check: Testing and Inspection
Compression Test
Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required
• Spark Plug Removal Tool (3122 B)
• Ignition Coil Puller (T40039)
• Torque Wrench (5-50 Nm) (V.A.G 1331)
• Compression Tester (V.A.G 1763)
Test Sequence:
• Observe the safety precautions, refer to => [ Safety Precautions ] Safety Precautions.
• Engine oil temperature a minimum of 30 degrees C (86 degrees F).
• Battery voltage at least 12.7 volts.
- Remove the engine cover. Refer to => [ Engine Cover ] Engine Cover.
- Disconnect the electrical connectors - arrows - from the ignition coils.
- Remove the ignition coils using ignition coil puller (T40039).
- Remove the spark plugs, using spark plug removal tool (3122 B).
- Check the compression using compression tester (V.A.G 1763) and adapter (V.A.G 1763/6).
• Using the tester, refer to the operating instructions.
- Operate the starter until the tester no longer indicates that the pressure is increasing.
Compression Pressure:
- Install the sparks plugs, tightening specification. Refer to => [ Ignition System Component Overview ] Service and Repair.
- Install the ignition coils with power output stage. Refer to => [ Ignition Coils with Power Output Stages ] Service and Repair.
• By separating the connections, Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) are stored to memory. After the test, check the fault memory and erase, if necessary.
- Read the Engine Control Module (ECM) DTC memory using the vehicle diagnostic tester.
